Hi there, I am moving to Northland, Hikurangi ish area and am trying to find a reasonable ISP for a rural area.

I am currently with lightwire and live in a rural area in the Waikato, service and pricing have been awesome!

Now I am moving I have searched but not found anything well priced with decent bandwidth, currently use 250gigs.

Any suggestions?

Try Stratra networks (check spelling) and they do have a Facebook page

Check out Uber Group as their wireless internet may cover your new location.

Go with Uber or if you can get 4G RBI pick one of the numerous providers who can supply that

As someone who lives in the area, I would say it's no going to be so much a case of who to go with, more what is available, (and from who), that meets your needs.

It will all depend on your location really, as there is a BIG variance in availability in the "Hikurangi ish" area.

Fixed line:

If you're lucky, you land near a cabinet in range of VDSL so your choice of ISP is whoever you like. (Good price, Very Good or Good speed, Good data)

If you're not as lucky, but still in range of (decent) ADSL, again, the choice of ISP is whoever you like. (Good price, Average speed, Good data)

If you're unlucky you'll only be in range of poor (<5 Mbps) ADSL, (or none at all), but again ISP choice is yours. (Good price, Poor speed, Good data)

Wireless:

The area to the West of Hikurangi is pretty well covered by both 4G and 3G RBI wireless. The area to the East of Hikurangi is more hilly so coverage is more patchy, and only 3G at the moment. 4G speeds can be very good (50Mbps+) while 3G speeds are still good (20Mbps+)

A number of providers sell RBI wireless products but one of the best is Ultimate Broadband. A couple of their packages:

$99 for a 4G service with 130GB of data @ 80GB peak + 50GB offpeak. (Good price, Very Good or Good speed, Average Data)

$139 for a 3G service with 500GB of data @ 250GB peak + 250GB offpeak. (Average price, Good speed, Good data)

Uber Group are the local wireless provider (like Lightwire in the Waikato) and they have their own wireless towers so their coverage is different to the RBI wireless providers (whose coverage is all the same). So if you can't get RBI wireless coverage, you may be able to get coverage from them. Their biggest wireless package:

$109 for a 10/6 Mbps service with 110GB of data. (Good price, Average speed, Average data)

Other:

There are a few patches of rural fibre in the Hikurangi area so if you're lucky enough to land near one of those, (and have deep pockets to get it installed!!) then you can get a fibre connection.

When I was considering doing this I was told Snap (before 2Degrees) were the ones to talk too. Not sure if that's still the case.

Good luck finding something that meets your needs. Unfortunately with rural broadband you only get to pick two from: Price, Speed, Data.

I was just up in Northland last week doing some installs for http://www.ultimatebroadband.co.nz/rbi-wireless.html

There is extra travel on top of their install cost for your area, but could be an option if you can find an alternative. As mentioned above, if you use a lot of data then we do a 500GB (250peak/250offpeak) plan. This is only 3G though as the 4G plans are not actually RBI regulated plans.
