Any of you that have plenty of free minutes?

I need to slowly make more calls and find reasons to do so even if it's going to be chit chats. I have over 1,100mins. I am with 2D's $19 pack. I just tend to use apps like WeChat etc.

My dad has over 700 mins he's with the $8 2D pack that gives 60mins and 250 TXT (no data). We are starting to think that he's better with Skinny's casual plan @ 20c per minute and simply just give up the 700 units. This month for example being a week short of his new billing cycle he consumed 20mins. At this rate he would have 40 more carryover mins.

Thoughts?

i have taken over my sons phone and plan and in a couple days it will be 1400 minutes carried over . no way im going to use them but if i stop the plan i will have nothing.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I think that is the reasoning behind them, get people locked into their carrier as if they change they will "lose" the minutes that they will never use anyway.

Well on prepay you can just give them your sim card. Not too sure about on account plans since it is in your name, not just on an anonymous number.

If month after month you have more and more carried over minutes that you never use. After 12 months they start to expire while you are always paying your monthly fee month after month. Wouldn't it be better to go got a cheaper plan or a casual plan if it suitable and simply dump the carried over minutes one would never use anyway.

AFAIK maybe under the postpaid plans with share everything? Under prepay they may only have Me2U as in credit (money).

Nor can one go from a carryover unit (pre)pay to a more suitable casual prepay within the same provider ..

I currently have 3808 carryover minutes on my 2d plan. Looks like I don't talk on the phone enough.

So effectively for $19/mth you have unlimited calling and texts, how awesome is that???!!!

My daughter has the $8/mth pack and I share my data with her, is a very effective way of keeping costs down

Yeah, I've got 1,000's of minutes. It's nice not having to worry about minutes.

I also have many Gb of data at the moment, however some months my usage is really heavy so roll over data saves me heaps in what would otherwise be casual rates.

IMHO 2degrees has changed the way kiwi's use cell phones, they certainly have for me.

I joined them early, before the big 2 started copying their ideas/plans, and it completely changed the way I used cell phones. It was so liberating being able to make calls without worrying about peak times or what network my friends were on (remember those bad old days??).

I think it is important to support the little guys and innovators. The fact that Skinny matches/beats many of 2degrees deals is not enough reason enough for me to change over - I know that if 2degrees went bust, Skinny would disappear soon after - Skinny is Sparks temporary budget brand after all. The cynical side of me wonders to what degree Skinny is being subsidised by Spark.

To be fair, it wasn't 2Degrees entry to the market that forced that change, (although it was related to costs for new entrants), it was the ComCom's regulation of mobile termination rates that meant it no longer mattered what network you were on.
