We are looking for an on premises SMS gateway solution. We have a couple of applications for messaging which are not candidates for internet based gateway services, namely security and safety applications where the risk of delays with relaying are significant, and secondly monitoring of the internet connection/mail server infrastructure itself.

Any suggestions for a NZ available product or vendor?

Hmm, how reliable is the SMS network for time and delivery critical messaging? (Sorry to derail the discussion so early on).

It only has to be more reliable than the incumbent solution which is relaying through about 3 SMTP relays before finally being sent as a SMS by an internet based service.

Please can this stay on topic.

Both Spark and Vodafone offer email-to-text services, I assume* these are hosted on their own infrastructure.
You should be able to engineer an adequately-reliable email link into your provider of choice.

Otherwise you'd need a device with a Vodem/T-stick and hence a direct interface to the cellular network.

* Yes, I know ;)

Not sure how technical you are, however for the last two years I've been using an app on an Android phone called SMS Gateway.

It receives SMS and fires off a GET request to a script you can use for processing further.  Sending SMS is simple to, just a POST request to the phone.

Our volume isn't huge, however I had big concerns about stability, and it's been nothing being rock solid.  I wouldn't recommend this for mission critical stuff, however for alerts and the like, it's fine.

Depending on the volume you could look to deploy a SMPP (not a typo) gateway.
All providers support them. But it tends to be of value when you are talking 5 figures of sms per month.

My employer uses etxt from spark, which so far has been very reliable. The secretaries use the email to sms gateway. I used the api documentation to write some php scripts to allow sending from a web app, with the benefit of being able to track delivery and read receipts. It was very straight forward.
