Hi Everyone!

Hope every one is having a good day.

This is my first post so I brand new and really would appreciate some help/advise.

Next month September 2016 I am moving to Manly Whangaparaoa.

We can only get ADSL at the house but download speed is 1-3 mbps.

I am looking at a RBI solution, The questions I need help with is

What is the best provider for speed/data amount in my location?

Do I get 1 or 2 antennas to increase speeds?

Is this the only solution or is there something better?

Fairly sure that area is well covered with FTTN cabinets. How have you confirmed that expected throughput?

I'm in Manly, an area not covered by a cabinet, and too far away for VDSL. When we moved in, the connection maxed out at about 2- 3 Mbps down. I replaced all the old phone cabling with Cat5e, added a small patch panel ran cable out to where I could and added some network jacks. I moved the phone line where it comes in from the road, the ETP I think it's called, into the linen cupboard, added a xdsl filter to it, and can get around 9 - 9.5 Mbps down, pretty much maxed out my connection. I'm pretty sure the spark website gives you an indication of max line speed you should be able to achieve, probably worth a look.

That was my thoughts - generally, you can get a minimum of about 10Mb/s in FTTN areas, and up to 10 times that if VDSL is good, so 1-3Mb/s seems very low.

Some FTTN cabinets upgrade but not all, unfortunately, address is running off a cabinet which is yet to be updated. . Chorus logs show your upgrade is planned for Year 8 or the government funded fibre plan (Jul-18 - Jun-19).

I think RBI is the way to go?

I wouldn't think there would be any work planned putting in new FTTN cabinets in the area when fibre is planned.

Depends. Looking at Vodafone's site, only some parts of Manly are likely to get a signal, and this is 3G not 4G. You would also have a data cap rather than unlimited, if you got a fixed line connection.

Where has the 1-3Mb/s throughput estimate come from?

I do RBI installs for Ultimate Broadband and Full Flavour

You can pay extra for optional second antenna that typically will give better performance. Ultimate also have a 3G only, high data usage plan, which could be an option if 3G speeds are good.

Yeah its Fibre for Jul-18 - Jun-19

I had a look and the house fall into 4g area by the looks of it.

I know its 1-3mb down speed as my Grandmother live at house at the moment

Even if you get a filter installed you might get a noticeable improvement.

a VDSL filter and if you have a little bit of electrical experience you probably could DIY it.

If you can post the line stats from the modem, it should be fairly easy to see if that could be improved with a master filter - I suspect you should be able to get around the 10Mb/s at least.

You could also try putting a few of the neighbour's addresses into the Chorus broadband checker - that is basically showing the current xDSL sync rate, and see what they are getting.

Spark seem to have good 4G coverage for 700mhz 4G.

You could do one of the BOLTE connections if you need a phone over the same connection.

Or a skinny broadband should work really well too. Much cheaper, but no phone.

Neither one requires a professional install, and works well with the built in antenna, but it has connections on the modem for external antenna if you're that way inclined.
