Hi All, I've recently got connected to our local RBI network (Wireless Nation using the Vodafone Tower at Waitakere Village) using a Huawei B315 router and have been a bit dissapointed with speeds (tested using Ethernet cable to router).

Even during off peak periods, I'm lucky to get down speeds of 3-4mbs and uploads of around 2mbs when I test using Speedtest.net

The stats on the router all appear fine and typicall with 4/5 signal bars read:

Network mode:4G
Rsrq:-12dB
Rsrp:-95dBm
Rssi:-69dBm
PCI:283
Upload Frequency:730.5MHZ
Band:28

Do these numbers look ok? Would an external antenna help significantly?
With the speeds I'm getting it's not that much different to the ADSL speed we can get over the copper network.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have RBI and I have sometimes had speeds like yours at peak times during school holidays when the tower gets overloaded. I am in the countryside, about 20 km or more from the tower, no direct line of sight. More normal speeds for me used to be 20-30 mbps most of the time, which went up to maximum 50 mbps when I added a second antenna. I now have two external antennas but even one (if you don't already have one) would probably boost your speeds considerably. Holidays are almost over. Check your speeds again next week and see if there is any improvement.

How far out from the Township are you? I know for a fact that 4G speeds there are solid.

Assuming your part of the Waitakere facebook page, you will have seen my speedtests when 4G first went live there.

Give me a DM if your interested in a more in-depth look at your options here, I would be more than happy to give things a skim, I'm just up the fair end of wairere...

I have some pretty solid shapemaps of coverage of that tower for 4G, 85% of the coverage from it is actually really well connected copper wise too (kinda as expected when the exchange is also where the tower is) so ild be happy to give some indication there too once i know exactly where about we are talking :)

Do be aware, that tower has some pretty clear cutoffs, max bars on a signal meter dropping down to tower handoff (generally to the surounding 3G towers) is not an uncommon sight.

on that note, should probably have clarified, my test was on a CAT4 4G device, 700Mhz only.

I have tested closer on the 100/50 mark off peak time however have no idea which test that was.

While im out for work tomorrow or on the way back, ill snap another test within range (i personally live just on the edge of range for it, where the 3G from Waitatarua wins out). I expect it still will easily be within the 50+ range however.

Really do suspect it to be a location/setup issue with the OP, when i hear more details ill be able to give more input there.

External antenna does help, x2 is even better.

You could try a spark/skinny rbi service, might have less congestion.

AFAIK that tower is not 4G enabled for spark yet.

Have you tried moving your Modem around the house, and try it in a window. Its possible that if you don't have Line of Sight your signal is bouncing off a nearby hill and coming from a different direction.

This is late but can you try see if you can get connected to the Doers network? I get around 70 down and 40 up with them and its unlimited data
