As per subject line, myself and a few friends (all geeks, naturally) find ourselves on plans, either prepaid or contract, as you do.

The problem begins when we find ourselves often nuking our data allowance portions, and barely touching the calling or texting portions of said plan.

So the question here is- are there any providers (or specific plans) that are much better for heavy-data-users who don't need a large amount of minutes or texts? I'm sure someone here must have run the numbers at some point.

About how much data is required per month and how much are you prepared to pay?

Ahh, personally I'm usually looking at 2-3GB per month, paying up to around NZD$40?

As for minutes, myself I barely use an hour of calling a month, often don't use any at all.

Text, maybe a hundred texts per month? I mostly use online messaging instead.

Have you looked at Vodafone My Flex prepay, where you can adjust your plan to suit, increase data and decrease minutes/txt. Carry over data/mins.

e.g. 3gb data, 50 mins, 50 txt, = $33 / 28 days

Skinny Direct - $30.00/mo for 3gb data, unlimited calls and texts and either $10.00/gb (bought packs) or you can bump up to the $50.00/mo 6gb plan.

I know you said less minutes etc however this is the best (mobile) data plan out at the moment.

As above there are some good options, but maybe also look at the problem from a different angle, and try to ensure you're connected to wifi wherever possible (and safe) and ensure apps/phone updates/etc are set to only use wifi where possible? I significantly reduced my usage just by changing my podcast app to only download over wifi (not sure why I originally set it to download over cellular!) and ensured a few of my favourite albums were downloaded to the device instead of constantly streaming. Just a thought :)

Sidefx, good suggestions, but way ahead of ya ?? I already limit any possible updates to WiFi, limit background data, use Google's data reduction settings, etc etc. I'm in IT myself so just often find myself out and about and needing to access things online, often in a situation where there is no wifi network (or it's down, and that's why I'm there).
The skinny plan sounds pretty good so far.

Works out $32.00 for 3GiB data, 120mins and unlimited texts - it is somewhat more expensive. Also I prefer the Spark network over 2degrees (also, there is no coverage for 2degrees in many of the places I visit). If you only use data then it is fine but for me, I do call and text still so depends on what you do and where you go.

Sparks network is the most consistent for coverage IMO.
