I've just been looking at what data sharing options are offered by the three main telcos for those of us who want to share our main plan data with an iPad or other similar device. I have to say, the offerings are a bit disappointing. Here's what I've found so far:

2degrees: Pioneered data sharing and used to be easy to set up. However currently I can find no option in their online portal to set it up, and no promotion of it on their web site. Have they quietly removed this feature due to limitations of their new billing system?

Spark: Quoted some confusing numbers when I indicated that I wanted two devices sharing 7.5Gb. My understanding of what was offered is $80 for the standard 7.5Gb plan, plus a $6 premium for data sharing.

Vodafone: Appears to offer data sharing over numerous devices at no extra cost. Brilliant! But, this is indicated as a limited time offer with no indication of the length of the promotional period of the likely cost when the promotion is over.

Is there anything I've missed before I make a judgement on which is best?

Vodafone Red share plans require a 24 month contract to get free data sharing. Otherwise it is $10 per month per device. Remember you need 1x voice connection. Per 1x data connection too.

'Red Share' appears to be a different product from 'Tablet Share' which is what I was looking at:

Note the vague 'limited time' reference in the image above.

It appears that Tablet Share is available to people on open term plans, albeit with a reduced number of shared devices allowed:

There's info on 2degrees shared data on their website here, and the Family Share where you can also share voice stuff for an extra $25/month/device is here (although I don't really see an advantage for that plan over a standard $16 prepay setup). Looks like it's only activated by txt rather than via the web.

As above the 2D one is free on pay monthly and setup via text or calling customer service. Text is by far the easiest option.

I used to have 7-9 sims set up to data share with my main 2D account.

Now I can't find any info via the portal, meaning I don't know if I still can on or not.

There's a limit of 5 shares per connection. And it can't be setup online at the moment but you just have to send one text to setup each SIM.

Thanks for the info on 2degrees. I couldn't find it when looking through their web site.

It's extremely frustrating having to wait in the call centre queue or fumble around typing up silly SMS codes, but at least the option's there.
