I have heard people say this before.  Is this right?  If one uses a 3/4G phone in a Wifi hotpot can the laptop and other devices get online?   Cheers.

Do you mean "in a wifi hotspot" or "as a wifi hotspot"?

Yes, is not like the US where most plans restrict tethering.  Annoyed at Spark for being the first to restrict it with their latest 'unlimited' plan, but no restrictions on any other plan on any other network.

Thanks all. To put my phone into hotspot mode and let others use my data. The spell checker said tethering was not correct..... I see skinny direct and spark now have unlimited plans.

rayonline: Thanks all. To put my phone into hotspot mode and let others use my data. The spell checker said tethering was not correct..... But do any providers here have unlimited data? Not that I am seeking.

Spark and 2D do have Unlimited offerings, they do have some policies backing them for obvious reasons.

All Normal fixed data plans as far as i have seen, do not have tethering limitations.

VodafoneNZ and 2Degrees do not restrict PHS only Spark on the unlimited mobile data plan but you can buy add-on's for PHS on this plan that is restricted

PHS = Personal Hot Spot

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Didn't they do one, then quickly switch for a alternative (better market positioned) offering..

Edit:

https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobile/pay-monthly/max-plan/

Was quickly replaced with the 25GB plan as an official listed offering.
