I am using the following quickstart guide: https://www.ayomaonline.com/programming/quickstart-sim800-sim800l-with-arduino

I have tried different sim cards (confirming that they work by testing them in a mobile phone) but I cannot get them to register on the SIM800 module.

This is the module that I am using: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/SIM800L-V2-0-5V-Wireless-GSM-GPRS-MODULE-Quad-Band-W-Antenna-Cable-Cap/32877115526.html

The following are the AT commands and outputs:

AT+COPS=?
+COPS: (3,"VODAFONE","voda NZ","53001"),,(0-4),(0-2)
OK

AT+CFUN?
+CFUN: 1
OK

AT+CREG?
+CREG: 0,0
OK

I have checked power supply and that the SIM is plugged in correctly. Any other ideas?

What mobile bands does the unit support?

Does the unit only support GPRS 2G/2.5 if so what a waste of time buying it

John

Edit: Only VodafoneNZ has a live GSM / GPRS network and will be closed down

Hi John

I am just playing with an idea at present so as long as GSM / GPRS is still active, my Vodafone SIM should register, correct?

Last question, going forward, would this be a better option: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/SIM908-Module-GSM-GPRS-GPS-Development-Board-IPX-SMA-with-GPS-Antenna-for-Raspberry-Pi/32267381754.html; if not what should look for?

Kind regards

Andre

Ive used one with a sim800 on it and a VF sim to send and receive SMS and it just plugged in and worked with an example Arduino sketch. Could always be faulty?

Thanks Richard, yes I am beginning to think that that this is the issue. Just waiting for a reply from the seller to see if there is a way to confirm this.
