Heya, my family live in a lifestyle block in Waimauku just outside of Auckland. Their adsl was very average (5mbit down and not super stable) so I signed them up to wireless nation rbi. There's 4 of them in the house and they do a fair amount of zoom calls etc so they're on the 200gb peak time and unlimited off peak data for an eye watering $185/month. I also installed 2 antennas.

The issue is the peak time speeds which are turning awful and really a disgrace given how much they pay.

Peak time speeds are about 1-4mbit/sec, offpeak can be anywhere upto 50mbit as they have 4 bars of coverage and have almost direct LOS to the tower. Previously peak speeds were about 20mbit which was great.

I completely understand the finite bandwidth and shared resources in wireless Internet. I was wanting to hear your thoughts on anything I could do / is there any value in talking to wireless nation, even though they are just a reseller for the Vodafone rbi product (?). Or am I just going to be wasting my time?

Cheers

Sounds like the cell tower is over subscribed.

Try dropping their address into this site to see if there are any WISPs in the area: Broadband Map NZ

I have been there. It was horrible. I finally found a WISP and changed to that. Much better though not a perfect solution.

Yep a WISP might be your best bet in that situation.

Can you hold out ~6 months for Starlink?

Speeds look amazing so far, and true unlimited for cheaper than what you pay.

Vodafone RBI have a peak speed commitment of 30Mbps down and 5Mbps up. But I can't find anything on Wireless Nations website regarding their speed commitments.

Have you complained and see what resolution they suggest?

(you will need to complain several times if you wish to break your contract without termination fees).

6 months ago I moved one of my connections from a Huawei B525 with dual antennas to a B818 with a single dual pole antenna (ANT-228) and the peak speed difference was amazing due to better dual carrier support (4G+).

My peak speeds have gone from <2mbps during holidays to ~25Mbps. (Rural Taupo region). Outside these times it normally sits around ~50Mbps down.

What 4G router are you using?

[edit - I mistakenly put B618 instead of VOD-HUAWEI B818 MODEM VSTORE RRP $216.52+GST )
