Hi all,

I'd like to get a personalised mobile number based on a set of characters. The number should end with 2xxxxxx, e.g. 0212xxxxxx or 0222xxxxxx. I've tried calling several variations of the number and found that the 021 and 022 versions of the number are not in use. I haven't yet checked with Vodafone, but 2degrees told me they could not allocate the number to me but wouldn't give me a reason. I'm happy to sign up with any operator that has the number available, but I'm wondering what other options there? Here's what I've tried so far:

  • 0212xxxxxx - not in use. Edit: I rang Vodafone and they told me this is a prepay number already allocated.
  • 0222xxxxxx - not in use but 2degress won't assign it to me (nor explain why they won't)
  • 0272xxxxxx - already taken
  • 0202xxxxxx - I think this used to be Orcon but is now owned by Skinny, but Skinny say they can't allocate it to me.

Are there any other prefixes that I can try to sign up with? Also, anyone know why an operator would not want to allocate a specific number? There aren't any obvious patterns in the number, it's just based on a name.

Cheers

Stuart

Thanks - I rang that number and got a rapid beeping noise, what does that mean? And how can I find out which operator owns that number so I can call them?

Its possible blocks of numbers are reserved for future use with longer lengths.

Eg. All old 025 numbers were 025-xxx-xxx

And when telecom launched their 3g network, they became 027-4xxx-xxx

So everyone was able to design their dialing validation rules in pbx systems so that if the number started with 0274 you could instantly send / connect the call after exactly 6 more digits.

However if someone had a number that began with 0274 but had 7 more digits then the calls would not connect because the connection attempt was made after the 6th digit

Up until recently I had an 021-xxx-xxx number. Many companies find it odd when a cellphone number is that short. Many new numbers are in excess of 11 digits now. But my number was is stopping a block of 99 other numbers from being used.

I still have a 021 xxx-xxx number. And it would take a lot for me to give it up. Had it for nearly 20 years.

I also have an 021-xxx-xxx number. It surprises me how many people ask if it is my whole number, expecting 7 instead of 6 digits. I am aware of 8 digit numbers through VF now too, again another confusion for some people.

Both my personal and work numbers are 021 XXX XXX's - the work one only being issued at the beginning of this year by VF. Never had a problem with giving my numbers to companies etc. For some reason my wife can't remember a number if it's 10 digits, make it 9 and she can rattle if off no issues...

Yeah Im on a 6 digit as well, was my work number many moons ago and I took it with me when I moved on.

Was Vodafone account originally, then got it switched to Prepay (that was a nightmare), then moved to 2D when they started and it stayed there until where I am now, took it onto their V/fone account.

So I just tried the 029 version of the number I'm after and I hear a recorded message that says "the number you have called is not currently active or is invalid". Is it worth calling Vodafone again to ask if it's possible to get this number allocated?
