There's a story running tomorrow that appears to be fair go asking why a seller is flicking off a device that took down 3 cell towers.
Should be an interesting watch :)

Out of interest how does it degrade the network?
Here's the segment if you want to watch it (no login required).
Oblivian: One would presume resends telemetry and throws off mobile hand off.
It reportedly effected 3 towers.
There's a pinned post at the top of this thread area that has some pictorial wave forms.
I watched it but they didn’t say, I can see people getting them now just to annoy the telcos. One had to drive around like the old tv License vans trying to locate it then walk the street to find it

They usually just straight out amplify a big chunk of the spectrum with no gain control. Think someone yelling out on a loud speaker at full volume, very hard for anyone else around them to have a conversation.
The approved Cel-Fi repeaters have gain control and can can also be remotely shut down if they are causing interface on the network. E.G. if they fault or someone installs them all wrong.
Crazy I wonder how many the have sold over the years here

At the end of that Fair Go segment they recommended turning on wifi calling.
I have that for 2d, and I believe OneNZ offer that also, but I dont recall if Spark have that option yet??
Edit: I just looked at Himself's phone and it is an option, so thats turned on now.
Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

2degrees, OneNZ and Spark all have wifi calling :)
Spark however has limited usage to only in NZ, while 2degrees and OneNZ allow usage overseas as well (used to bypass roaming costs for calls and texts)
Spark also doesn't have the ability to text using wifi calling while the others do.
Without saying anything that will get me in trouble, Spark don't have that functionality on their mobile network YET. It's a very safe bet that Spark will be looking to enable this as a pretty standard feature of a full IMS based mobile network, which I'm sure all providers are more than happy to move their network to in preparation of the end of 3G.
Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.
I have (tucked away and unused) a Vodafone-branded cell network signal booster which someone gave me in ~2015. I imagine it funtions more as a microcell (femtocell?) and the functionality has been superceded by wifi calling.
Wifi calling has been a lifesaver for my wife, since our house (not in a valley) in Mt Eden (Auckland) has such terrible Vodafone reception it's completely unusable.

its good to finally see information about them coming out. i have for years been tracking down ones that have been causing interference. 99% of people dont understand they needed to get ones that are approved by the operator and the ones they brought were from mobilesignalbooster.co.nz
when they go wrong they can cause interference some 20kms away easy ( depending on elevation of tower/ flat ground/water etc.
