ie. Hopefully it never sends me a text message, but occasionally it might (if I move the car etc or if I am testing)...

A very quick perusal shows many 'pre-pay' options now seem to be nothing more than 7 day to 30 day bundles - I am wondering if there's still something with a long expiry ? Anyone aware of anything?

If it doesn't need data enabled, you could just put $5 on a Skinny sim once a year.

Otherwise your best option may be Kogan's small 365 day plan for $160 ($13.33 a month).

Kogan have some 365 days packs but they aren't cheap for your usage.

It might be cheaper to get a warehouse moblie sim and just put an amount of money on it for the casual rates when you are not testing.
Casual rate $0.16 per text.
Months you are going to do testing you can buy a "$4 unlimted Text pack" for 28 days.
Packs do not auto renew, so no worries about draining loaded credit.

Thanks for the pointers - I have to admit I wasn't sure how the casual utilisation worked - I think that will be good and the Warehouse option looks good.
