Hi all, might be a silly question but is it possible to receive calls from NZ numbers while in Australia?

I don’t want to enable roaming or pay extra.

The plan was to disable my NZ sim and have an Australia E-sim active while over there.

I’m with Contact mobile using iPhone.

Thanks in advance

@EviLClouD Interesting question for sure! Of course if you give the people in New Zealand you want h to call you your Australian number! +61xxxxxxxxx

Have you not made an international call before to another country yourself?

Your New Zealand service provider Contact mobile would have zero to do with this so not sure why you mentioned them

Oops sorry let me rephrase my question.

Can NZers call my NZ number while I’m in Australia, without me or them incurring charges?

@EviLClouD Wi-Fi calling handset into flight mode and Wi-Fi on and connected to Wi-Fi

People calling you will be charged the same as calling your number in New Zealand - They will not even know you are overseas

Assumes your provider supports roaming wifi.

@openmedia What is this Roaming Wi-Fi you speak of?

Will wifi calling work when connected to mobile data via an Australian telco?

or is it literally wifi only?

You can get it to work over mobile data with a AU SIM (search Geekzone) but depends on many factors or it will only work when connected to Wi-Fi

I've had success in making and receiving calls over the data of a second sim on a Samsung device a couple of years ago in Sydney.

It wouldn't work until I enabled data switching and prevented the home sim from being able to connect. (not paying for roaming was not sufficient to force it over the 2nd sim)

At the time I was able to set it to 2G to achieve this, but looking at the phone now it seems an update has limited the selection to 4G or 5G.

Maybe it's still possible if you manually lock it to the wrong network? I'm not sure.

Verify with Contact energy that they support wifi calling overseas, they are One NZ network so highly likely they do. Edit: looks like they do on their roaming FAQ.

For iPhone you can get wifi calling working with a workaround, leave the NZ sim enabled but with data roaming disabled. You want to change the network settings from automatic to manual (leave it selected to whatever it is for your provider).

When you land in Aus the NZ sim will still be active but unable to connect as it is set to manually connect to your NZ provider (which doesn’t exist in aus). The iPhone will fallback to using available data connection which can be another (e)sim or wifi itself.

Just don’t change the selection when you are in aus as you can’t change it back, I don’t think theres a way to manually define it, you can only select from what it finds and since One roams with pretty much all of the aussie networks it will connect and then wifi calling will only work when connected to wifi.
