Hi all,

forgive me i'm only learning in the wireless lan area regarding to networking etc .
Am keen to know the following please :

A) When connected on a wlan say you and flatties ar sharing a router  etc  how much, and can you see each others folders etc
on there pc's (laptops ) obviously I want to stop this if this is the case ??..

If so or if can be provisioned/  stopped how and where ?

B) if i access a free public hotspot my mac address would obviously be shown, will my firewall prevent any nasties if it is a open network i.e unsecured and open, or do I need to install something else I'm already concealing my IP adress via several proxys for online security etc .

I'd apprecaite any feedback, links etc around this topic and applications etc if any ..

Cheers

D

Welcome to Geekzone... For your first question, you can make sure people on the same network won't be able to access your files, by disabling File and Printer Sharing from your Network Adapter configuration.

On your second question, I don't see why worry about hiding the IP address. Using proxies will only hide it from sites you visit, not from people scanning the network. Make sure you turn the File and Printer Sharing off (unless you needed it, keep reading) and your personal firewall is active is correctly configured.

As for File and Printer Sharing, if you need it for any other reason, make sure you have a password for any Administrator account on your laptop, a password for your own account, and turn off any folder/drive sharing that you don't need.
