We are a company with about 20 odd staff.  Up until recently we have run an Asterisk box with a couple of primary rate ISDN's provided by TelstraClear.  This system has not being without it hassles - but on the whole it has worked well.  Recently we moved premises and decided to do away with the ISDN's and connect directly to a SIP provider across our TelstraClear fibre connection (10 meg both ways).

After many, many frustrating hours speaking with the various telcos we failed to find a single company that would provide a commercial level SIP solution.  We were running out of time and so decided to take the plunge and so signed up for 10 iTalk accounts and also a Conversant account as a backup.  We also approached SIPserve but couldn't even manage to get a response out of them to buy something (so I don't know how there customers get on when they have a support issue).

That was the start of our nightmares.  To keep a long story short we have had no end of problems since that point with iTalk and Conversant going down on a regular basis and many varied other issues.  This has usually been followed by a period of sitting 'on hold' for many hours only to be told - "Sorry - there is nothing we can do ... you will just have to wait 2/4/6/8/24/48 hours until its fixed".

So my question is simply this.  Are there any VoIP providers in NZ that can provide a decent commercial SIP or IAX solution to a business that is willing to pay decent money for the service? Or ... should we be giving up and just going back to an Asterisk/ISDN solution?

Cheers
David K

You're ahead of the market by about 3-6 months I'd say.

But also, I doubt you'll get ANY telco who will stand up and connect their SIP service to your equipment - the many hours you've spent will be repeated by the telco installer, and they will be worse because they won't have a clue how you've built your PBX.

Dont you just love technology? it's all standards based, but delivering a reliable service end to end - well, you can't if you don't have control of the whole solution end to end.

Your business comms are critical - how long are you going to be without your phone for?

Unfortunately as Antoniosk has said you're wanting something that you simply won't get in NZ .. yet

No major Telco in NZ has got serious about VoIP - CallPlus have their Commverge service and iTalk and we now have VFX available but other than that there isn't a lot unlike Australia where you have a large number of providers.

I've used iTalk as my only PSTN connection here in Wellington for 6 months now and have only had a single issue with an outage of about 2 hours. I know plenty of other people have knocked iTalk and it appears they do have some issues but I've been very happy.

I'm sure TCL are going to deliver us a rock solid SIP service for business and residential users but unfortunately at present you're pretty limited when it comes to options.

First up:  Welcome to Geekzone David Smile

Personally, and on behalf of our business we have 3 VFX lines now, after having given up in disgust on the iTalk service following 6 months of outages.

We trialled the first VFX line for 3 months to be sure of the reliability before connecting the additional 2 lines last week.  Reliability has never been an issue, unlike iTalk.

Phil Moore from WxC will no doubt answer your question in detail, but I suggest you start looking here:

http://www.xnet.co.nz/vfx/hardware.shtml

The SPA9000 would possibly be up to the job, and it is available now.  Failing that, it looks like the Epygi Quadro box would be a possibility.  Asterisk is another approach which WxC are working on, but a commercial service is still some time away at this point.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Grant.

Hi,

Thanks for everyone's reply.  I was starting to wonder whether I was just seriously missing something or whether there truly were no commercial solutions out there.  This gives me a few other avenues to pursue so I will pursue those and report back if we have any success.

Cheers

Hi,

This is UK-based, but rock-solid. They can provide Auckland DIDs.

When I say rock-solid, I mean it. I work (as a techie) for the parent company.

Customer service is excellent.

If you email me, I will give you a contact name.
