I am not sure if you get a choice of NZ Skye numbers and if your area depends on that too. If you go into the Skype site to buy a NZ Skype IN number you can see the choices it offers, just don't click the option to buy a number as you browse the numbers.

I searched for a prefix number available that allowed me to use the last four digits of my Telecom line at home, so it is easy for people to remember my Telecom home number and my new Skype IN number.

I have not tested my Skype IN number from outside my area (09) Auckland to see if there is a toll call, but the lady who replied to my email last week told me that you can dial in to my Skype IN number from anywhere in my country for free. Only I pay the 6 cents connection fee (with no toll - no per minute charge) if I dial OUT to a landline anywhere in NZ.

on the Skype site uner Skype in you get to choose country etc (after you have signed in). When you click New Zealand there is a drop down box to select area code. This has 03 04 09 only . (note no 07 for me ) You then see numbers to choose from with a more here etc option. If you have an 09 number it will be a toll call for non Auckland free calling area callers .

The calls coming to your SkypeIn number are not free. People pay like they would for a normal call.

Also, if you divert the call to a mobile phone then you will be paying out of your SkypeOut account, and the $0.06 is only valid for landlines, so with your arrangement you are paying every time someone calls your SkypeIn number.

At the end people pay to call you, you pay to have calls diverted to your mobile, and your telecommunication costs might edned up being higher than before...

I think that you may pay for landline calls in & out of your Skype In & Skype out features.

I understand that if you pay abolut NZ$3 per month for the additional Skype PRO features, you get free "Pay nothing per minute" calls as Caroline from Skype mentions in the email reply to me (see below).

Caroline mentions at the bottom of my email reply that these additional Skype PRO features benefits to ALL areas codes of New Zealand. So you may be right that you have to pay if you do not get Skype PRO?

It takes a moment to get your head around it all, as I was confused last week how it all really works etc.

If anyone finds out any more about this Skype IN for New Zealand, please do post here. All the more reply postings in this forum the better.

Nothing much more about SkypeIn than it's already discussed: you can subscribe to the service and get a New Zealand number. Calls to this number are not free (unless you are in the same area code) as some think.

SkypePro provides free local calls to LANDLINE only, anywhere in New Zealand. It does not include calls to mobile phones. My comment is that if someone has a SkypeIn number redirecting to a mobile phone then the call will be charged at standard SkypeOut call rates.

That's correct. And SkypeOut is pretty expensive for calls to a NZ Mobile Phone:

0.252 Euro per minute = NZ 45c per minute at the current exchange rate.

You are much better to use VFX for forwarding calls to a mobile, then it will only cost 30c per minute.

Hi Everyone

Yes, I did notice that the Skype call forward or call to mobile phones in NZ was around 45 cents. Quite expensive to call mobile phones and why I do not own a mobile phone. I am happy to use my laptop with Vodem mobility and Skype to make calls instead of a mobile phone.

I wonder if New Zealand will ever get that 3 X Series (Skype on the mobile phone with data monthly prices) in New Zealand? Does anyone know much about the 3 X Series? I guess that the Skype IN NZ numbers would be useful to call in to my Skype number if I had a 3 X Series mobile phone in NZ?

It seems like you don't move around very much, at least not outside the central areas of our major cities...

Vodafone's 3G coverage is not very good in city fringe or country areas, and there is no way you can use GPRS to make Skype Calls

It's not a very "mobile" solution really...

No, I actually have not been out of Auckland city much at all and I forgot about the 2G system not supporting Skype voice.

I guess that it does the job for me where I am most of the time in the 3G Broadband areas. Your comments are making me think too about the "3 X Series" mobile phones that support Skype, Yahoo and MSN etc. These "3 X Series" mobile phones, maybe they do not support Skype unless in a 3G area too?

Any ideas about how these "3 X Series" phones work anyone?

I think the 3 X would never arrive in New Zealand. They are a branded service/handset for 3, and not available as an individual product or service.

Also they are not even running a Skype client since there's no Skype for S60 yet, but instead they use iSkoot (press release confirming this).

So it's all a bit of a "number eight wire" thing, right?

Skype is not a standard VoIP service, so it's harder to deploy - and the fact that operators don't have much control on how it interacts with networks can cause problems. Telcos like to keep a tight control of their networks (and rightly so, I must add).
