Not for approx a week.

Basically, porting a number would take up to 7 days, whereas transferring broadband would take up to 2 days. So if you port the number first, and as soon as this is done transfer the broadband, you can do it seamlessly :)
Other way around *might* work, but more risk.

Hmm, this sounds really good. I'm on Telecom wholesale currently; So in theory, even if there is a "queue" on my cabinet for broadband\VDSL I should keep my current connection and not end up at the end of the queue?

Well, spent quite a bit of time on the phone to both snap and vodafone last night.

Snap initially recommended I do as above and port to 2talk first. They said I could start the signup process with them at the same time though and they would hold off on actually transferring\connecting broadband until I notified them that the 2talk port had gone through. They also recommended I phone Vodafone and ask them not to cancel the broadband when the 2talk port request came through; then when that is done phone snap up and they would transfer\connect the broadband straight away.

So I put in the port request with 2talk, signed up with snap (with a note not to "action" the broadband until I let them know that the number port was successful) then phoned Vodafone to ask them to hold off on cancelling the broadband when the port request came through. The CSR said she would let their provisioning team know. Then phoned back to say that she had spoken to one of their provisioning specialists who was adamant that with their system it's actually best to do it the other way around, i.e:

Transfer the broadband to snap, leaving the number with Vodafone. They will hold onto the number until the port request comes through from 2talk. Hmm. So I rang snap back and they agreed to put through the request for broadband first... though the fritzbox I need for VDSL may take a while to process so I need to go to naked DSL and use my own modem initially. And I've put in a request with 2talk to hold of porting the number until broadband is done.

Will see how it goes...

So you think Vodafones recommended order for doing this will not work? Could it be that they will termporarily put it on Customer Link or equivalent to keep it active?

Confusion abounds at Vodafone... :)

2 Talk contacted me to say that they agree in principle with Vodafone's method of doing it; But to confirm with Vodafone that they will put the number onto CustomerLink\ExchangeDirect to keep it active so that the number can still be ported.

After much time on hold, Vodafone have changed their line and now say that CustomerLink\EchangeDirect is for business customers only and I either need to transfer the number to snap and then port it from them to 2talk... or do as orignally recommended and port number to 2talk first, then get snap to activate the Broadband as a new connection.

Ah well. Guess I'll have to risk going back on a queue for Broadband at cabinet (which happened when I changed from Red Network to Wholesale - not fun because noone could give me any idea of when it would actually be connected or even where on the queue I was)

Yup, customer link could work, but like you said they *usually* only provide this for business customers. Note that customer link costs $$.

I still stick by the way I said earlier, as I still believe it has the lowest risk of losing your number and losing your port at the exchange. Good luck though, keep us updated!

Yeah; TBH I would have been better to just do it the way you said in the first place without even notifying Vodafone of the plan...

What has now happened is that:

1) Following Vodafones original advice (that it was best to transfer broadband then port number) I asked snap to fast track the broadband transfer so that it went through before the 2talk port request.

2) Then 2talk said make sure it stays active, and Vodafone said no customerlink for residential adn the original advice was wrong.

3) I contacted snap but the broadband had already been transferred (so it's up an running now...) Very impressive turnaround from them!

4) At this point I assumed my phone would stop working but it's actually still going. So I've got a ticket in with 2talk to fast track the porting... Fingers crossed, but I suspect I may have lost my number.

Just got this from 2talk. It's odd though that the phone line is actually still working and I can still make calls to and from it. Not really sure where to go from here except to accept that I've lost it.

We attempted to have the number ported today, but the port failed when it was activated due to the number being inactive. Vodafone should be able to set the number up as a CustomerLink/ExchangeDirect which will actvate the number with out the need for a physical line. Once this has happened we will be able to port the number.

When I last talked to Vodafone the CSR essentially said "no customerlink for residential and it's not our problem because you're no longer our customer; You need to sort this with snap and 2talk" (not an actual quote just the gist of the converstion) despite the fact I'm paid up to the end of the month with them and I assume they still "have" the number. I'd happily pay for customerlink if needed and it was their advice that I do it this way... Oh well, live and learn. :D

I'd love to understand more about this number porting stuff.

It seems it's all sorted in the mobile space but in the fixed space we're still having way to many problems.

I had an issue the other week where my customer had transposed some numbers and I didn't spot it. But the reject notice coming back from the providers didn't make any sense. It should have just said that the number wasn't associated with the customers account but said that the receiving provider had rejected the request (which clearly wouldn't make any sense).

I still don't understand why 2Talk can't just pull numbers from the pool.

I still don't understand why it takes a week to move numbers.

As the number was yours with VF, I think you do need VF to have it set up so you can get 2Talk to pull it.

I'd suggest a quick ping to Johnr to see if he can point the job in the direction of someone who can sort it out.

You had the answer the 2nd time. Ask Snap to transfer the broadband from Vodafone onto their naked plan but the phone number will still be with Vodafone and connected. Then once this is done port to 2Talk. This is what I am doing no problems wont even bother ringing Vodafone just confuses the matter. Broadband came over in a couple of days should be about a week for 2Talk.

Will be interested to see how you get on. That's the order the person at VF intially said was best (which seemed contrary to advice on this forum and from the snap CSR) Subsequently 2talk recommended I ring VF and make sure the number will stay active after broadband is transferred, and when I talked to another person at VF they said it wouldn't work - i.e. they said the number would go inactive when the broadband was transferred.

I then rang snap to ask them to hold off on the transfer of broadband, but I believe it was in process already; It then turns out that they (snap) actually did a broadband with POTS transfer so that I wouldn't lose the number; so now snap currently hold my number and the port by 2talk from snap is due today.

Ok got my confirmation from 2Talk number will be ported next monday VDSL is rocking 37Mb/s and vodafone number is still connected at the moment working fine. On my Vodafone account I can see its just a phone line now. Got 2 Panasonic phones with DECT using Fritz Box as base station and not a VOIP packet lost on my testing so far.

Well that would have been good to know; but when I spoke to VF the second time they seemed to think that order might end with the number going inactive and me losing it.

In any case, my port just went through and has worked fine; So we got there in the end :) Now just waiting on a fritzbox so I can switch to VDSL too ;-)
