I'm looking at signing up with snap for naked VDSL but want to keep my current 09 landline number (on 2talk)

I see a recommendation in another thread that the best way to do this would be to get the naked DSL enabled on the second pair coming to my house, then once that's working get the current number ported to 2talk, effectively ending the service on that pair with the broadband that's currently on there.

I have a self installed master filter, so swapping that to the unused pair on the incoming line shouldn't be a problem.

But is this still the best way to do it and will it work with a new VDSL connection? And what info do I need to give to snap(?) to ensure the VDSL is installed on the unused pair and not the currently in use one? I guess it would also count as a new connection, though I see that's free on a 12+ month contract with snap.

Sounds like a whole lot of hassle to go to avoid a few days of interruption to your phone line (I assume this is your homeline?). Once you port your landline number, you can just forward it to your mobile. That way you won't miss any calls while the VDSL is being setup.

It sounded relatively painless to me; what would the main hassle be?

Yes it is my homeline but yes I would prefer to avoid interruption to my phone\net. I've heard the stories of people ending up on a queue waiting for a free port on their cabinet for days or even weeks...

If you want to try, go for gold. I'll be interested to hear how you get on. Your main hassle would be getting Snap/chorus to activate VDSL on your 2nd pair, while there is an active phone line & ADSL on your 1st pair. Maybe someone else here has had some experience with that?

That's what I'm hoping. It was suggested by Steve as the safest option here:

but didn't work in that persons case. Which is why I'm wondering what I need to do different and if it's worked for anyone else.

Moved to naked first and when that was completed I ported the phone number to 2talk.

No downtime and a total hassle free experience!


awesome! Was that from another ISP? And did you do as suggested above and get the naked installed on second pair first? So you effectively had 2 phone lines for a short while?   If not how did you "keep" the phone number while moving to naked?

Hmm.. that sounds good, my number was originally from Telecom but is with Vodafone now... I was under the impression though that if I sign up with Snap, when the naked gets installed that will cancel the Vodafone connection and return my number to Telecom, meaning I "lose" it, which is the other thing I want to avoid.

I actually did this with my parents line down in Nelson last year. My parents had their landline and broadband with Vodafone and they were wanting naked dsl and voip line with 2talk. In this case things went quite smoothly as the number port was done first and then all there was to do is arrange the naked dsl which I arranged and since they were already with Vodafone the naked broadband was done within an hour after me talking to them. So all that I had to do when I went to Nelson was connect the SPA2102 up to their Modem.

We recently changed our homeline with Telecom to VOIP with WorldNet (Worldnet VIP). We ported our home number to Worldnet's VOIP and it was $20 to port. They told us that you cant cancel your land line with your existing provider until the line stops working or you will lose your existing number.

I now have Worldnet VIP on Line 1 on my VOIP and 2talk on Line 2 so effectively having 2 phone lines. The process is pretty easy. 2talk virtually connects to your PAP2 adapter and configures everything so you don't have to change anything.

I was told by snap if I transfer the number first the broadband would be lost.

In my case - Broadband then the number.

Not for approx a week.

Basically, porting a number would take up to 7 days, whereas transferring broadband would take up to 2 days. So if you port the number first, and as soon as this is done transfer the broadband, you can do it seamlessly :) 
Other way around *might* work, but more risk.

The reason I have both is that I cannot make two calls at once with the Worldnet VIP for some reason. Ideally I would like both lines to be connected to WorldNet VIP and when someone is on the line I can simply pick up line 2 and dial out. But I cant do that. With 2talk if I connect both lines to 2talk I can actually call out when someone else is using line 1.

The other reason I connected 2talk is that there is no line rental for 2talk, you just pay for the calls you make.
