freitasm: You cannot call 111 without a SIM card.

Im not sure what that has got to do with using the phone as an android app running 2 talk .. the android app on 2talk should make a 111 call ..

Read the third post in the thread.

Cheers... missed that point Cool

Predictions are hard to make. Especially when they are about the future.

When I turn the phone on is says that there is no simm and that I can only make emergency calls.

I just tried it out and your right and the skinny phone lied to me. Glad it was not an emergency.

It seems really bad that a phone would say it can do emergency calls when it can't.

Looks like I will have to hunt down my year 2000 sim.

It's not because it's a Skinny phone. NO MOBILE PHONE IN NEW ZEALAND CAN PLACE 111 CALLS WITHOUT A SIM CARD.

That's a requirement because of so many prank calls where people took the SIM cards out and called 111.

Now, if you put a SIM card on any device, even if there's no balance, then it should go through.

Obviously your 2000 SIM may not work at all if it's not registered with a network (being that old I'd bet it's not linked to an account or if it's prepaid probably not reloaded in years).

But you should create different topic to discuss this if you want.

Siemens A510 are great for the home. Lets you use both SIP and POTS and the option to route calls to specific handsets depending on what registration they come in on.

At the top end of spending I would suggest a Fritzbox. Around $400 though so some people get scared away from that. Seriously good units though. Really good telephony stuff in it. Built in DECT and dual ATA ports.

The cheapest way though would be to get a Cisco SPA112 and just plug any old phone in.

Edit: Just saw the 'noob friendly' remark.... Siemens would be the go. Nice and simple and not much you actually need to know. Just put the registration details in and you are away.
