...who can recommend a good but not-to-spendy VOIP phone?

I don't see any recent threads on this topic, so I hope this not a dupe topic which will excite Mr PeterReader ;)

For my own personal use I have the option of a decent Linksys ATA box I have lying around here in a box somewhere... or I if I am feeling very adventurous I might even unearth an old router I have with dual ATA ports and try to configure it as a repeater with my existing network, but...

I'd like to encourage a few of my phone buddies to sign up so we can have free calls and I really don't have the time or patience to go to all that trouble setting up that kind of hardware for the computer-illiterate, so...

Are there handset/devices available which I can point them to which are noobie-friendly plug-in-and-go with minimal amount of high-tech config?

I know this is probably a tall order, but thought I might venture to enquire all the same hehe

We have some old Grandstream BudgeTone BT100 phones knocking about in the office - I was going to put them on TradeMe, but you can send me a private message here and make me an offer for one you might just get it for not very much.

They are new, but way out of warranty and the deal is - they are as is where is no guarantees or support provided.

If you have Wifi and an Android 2.3 or better phone (with wifi) then you could use that as a voip handset.

I have one of these I have no sim in it so no crazy data charges and it has 111 service so if you loose power you can still contact emergency services.

I use 2Talks android app which has nice texting features and cheap calls.

freitasm: You cannot call 111 without a SIM card.

True, but wont it still be able to call 111 if you drop your normal, non skinny SIM into it?

Buy a Cisco SPA122 ATA and then you can stick any old analog fone on to it..

The Gigaset cordless have a relatively straight forward config, 2Talk is included in their wizard setup.

The A580IP is a slightly older model and is reasonably well priced at the moment because of that.

If you know where the SIM card is when it's an emergency, yes. Actually ANY SIM card, regardless of the phone being SIM locked on not (as Skinny handsets are).

And the g722 codec which is on by default seems to deliver great call quality. I just began using the Android app the other day.

I didn't even know they _had_ an Android app until now, I've been using Bria for the past year or so. I'm surprised they didn't send an email to their customers saying it'd been released.

Ooh, and SMS even works. Limited video support though, so Bria may be useful yet.

When I turn the phone on is says that there is no simm and that I can only make emergency calls.

I just tried it out and your right and the skinny phone lied to me. Glad it was not an emergency.

It seems really bad that a phone would say it can do emergency calls when it can't.

Looks like I will have to hunt down my year 2000 sim.

Looks like they only just released this in the last month - I was mucking about with trying to get 2talk working on my android phone.
Sadly it looks like their app has the same issue as whatever it was I was trying - ie phone goes to sleep and drops the 3G/Wifi connection - so pretty much cant phone into your android phone - hmmmm.

Only if it's G722 end to end which it isn't most of the time..

Im not sure what that has got to do with using the phone as an android app running 2 talk .. the android app on 2talk should make a 111 call ..
