Most phones use pins 2&3 on the RJ11 but there are a few that use 1&4 so this could be why your line is dead.
Some of them had a setting to change and some of them were hard wired ( the white and blue telecom touch phones were like this )

They are available off trademe, there is also someone saying they will custom make them.

Chances are that plug isnt made for the flat "satin grey" cables and the pins are just sitting in insulation.
