Most phones use pins 2&3 on the RJ11 but there are a few that use 1&4 so this could be why your line is dead. Some of them had a setting to change and some of them were hard wired ( the white and blue telecom touch phones were like this )
They are available off trademe, there is also someone saying they will custom make them.
