ajobbins: I'd ask the call taker "If you have time, can you please read back the Calling Line ID you have been presented" so you can check they are seeing the right number. They can always decline if there are other calls in the queue.

They are not always keen to give out the CID, best to ask if they can confirm the number they see is: [insert your number here]. Same if you want to confirm address.

Thanks. Was wondering about the address thing myself but was thinking they might be reluctant for privacy reasons. For some reason I didn't think of giving it to them and asking to confirm if it's correct, even though it's the standard way to handle stuff like that when privacy issues come up.

I remember the Sunday morning testing of all the 111 trunks from Courtenay Place exchange. In the 70s. It went a lot better once the least hungover took over answering.

In those days 111 calls weren't frequent and the calling number had to be manually traced.

You are allowed to call 111 for the purposes of testing, you don't need permission - There is no 'process' for this. I was one of the people testing 111 calls when we setup 2degrees, testing this is a necessity and the initial operator that would pick up the call is only there to hand you off to the right emergency service - So it doesn't tie up the 111 service or anything.

Obviously don't just call and hangup, because if the operator can hear you or anything in the back ground - Thats enough for them to determine the call to be an NSEC or a NON-SPEECH EMERGENCY CALL. If the call gets identified as an NSEC then it will be immediately referred to Police and then the Telco to provide a minimum set of subscriber details for the caller (if available). The operator will not always take it any further than this but you can be sure that if you did it more than once in a night that someone would be trying to contact you and this is a waste of Police resources.

Call 111 and when the operator picks up - Simply say "Test call, thank you" and he/she will just say thanks and goodbye.
