Where did the cable you're using come from?

Some things use non standard cables because manufacturers are bastards.
If you look at the plugs of the cable side by side, they should have the same colours in the same pins.

If you are able to plug the old phone into a port on the fibre router and the phone works, then that port on the router is the ATA port.
You can buy separate ATA devices - but you don't need one in this case because it appears the orcon router has one built in.

Can you scrounge up another phone with a cable from somewhere else? Just to satisfy yourself that phones in general work ok on your router port.

Still sounds like a dud uniden phone or bad cable.

yeah that would have been my assumption as well - bad cable or bad phone.  Except that the same cable works with the old phone.  And the new phone I've got to work when plugging it into a copper network.

I have pics of phone jack, modem jack cable jack and modem type if that sheds light.  Not sure how to post them as when I click the picture icon the pop up window doesnt' let me browse my files?

You can upload pics to https://www.geekzone.co.nz/gallery.asp

Then add them to your post.
