Definity has the calling card of OWT – It’s also another thing we will never get a full answer to as the records, as well as the people who were around then may not be here anymore.

 

The comment on “reducing wear” also carries plausibility – Another colonial world view inherited where keeping costs down as young colonies (and equipment) are expensive – In the early days of dialling and placing own calls, your subscriber number could be anywhere between 1 and 5 or 6 digits (by that logic, less numbers dialled, less wear on the dial, right?)

I doubt that dial wear was an issue. The early dials were intended to last the life of the phone. In those days that could be 20 years or more.
