Or a router than can run the Tomato/FreeWRT/DD-WRT etc firmwares. I've been using a Buffalo G54S running Tomato for the past couple of years and it's the most stable router I've ever owned (and it only cost AU$50).

Also a good option. I use both a Draytek modem and a WRT54GL running OpenWRT myself.

Do you disable routing/firewall on your modem and put a router in front of the modem ?

The Draytek modems can do PPPoA to PPPoE relay. Most Ethernet routers can do PPPoE authentication which means that the router then gets the public IP address.

You can also do this with "half bridge" mode on other routers but this is more of a hack as it uses weird DHCP stuff to achieve something similar.

I have telstra cable now, but when I had Telecom ADSL2 I set the Telecom modem to bridged mode so that the Buffalo router ran the firewall and did the routing/NAT'ing.

Do you run OpenWrt in PPPoE mode with Draytek modem?
I tried PPPoE with Linksys AG300 modem in half-bridge mode , but did not get it working.

Thought that Draytek and OpenWRT were sufficient.
Do I need to install pfSense as well ?

I should have been clearer.

I use a Draytek with OpenWRT behind it here.

I use a Draytel with pfSense behind it elsewhere.

Of course you could also use just the Draytek.

I have used IPCop in the past.
It looks like pfSense is a more professional router/firewall ?

Yes pfSense based on FreeBSD instead of Linux, BSD has a reputation as more stable and secure ethernet router with more features.

Time to find a new industry!

I have setup Draytek Vigor 120 in PPP0A passthrough mode, Client PPPoE enabled.
Configure OpenWRT to use PPPoE.
See WAN IP address on router now.
DNS requests from PC work well, but no web pages show up in the browser.
Am I missing something on OpenWrt ?

I am using a Gigset S685 IP off a Linksys WAG160Nv2 router with no issues. Works a treat!

My current configuration works great as well.
Dynalink RTS1230E modem in PPPoA mode, firewall switched off, router is DMZ
Linksyst WRT54Gl with OpenWrt in automatic mode

Registration of VOIP provider is almost instant on the Gigaset A580IP now.
Since using the Dynalink modem we pages load instantly.

Looks like the Draytek modem was faulty..
