richms: Yeah, the WXC ones are not locked, just preconfigured.

Often ones off ebay have been locked and then unlocked by the sellers just cloning the eeprom from a non locked one onto them, so when you buy 2 of them, you cant use them both as they have the same mac address.

This is pretty common with all the cheap PAP2's around that are ex Vonage. There also seem to be some fake PAP2's out there that also all have the same MAC.

A WxC provisioned ATA will work fine with any VoIP provider after a factory reset. You can also disable the provisioning out of the box before you connect it to the internet if you don't want it to download the WxC config.

This differs to overseas providers who often lock down their ATA's to a service which can't be removed, even with a factory reset.

WxC simply offer autoprovisioning of devices, and IMHO being the only major VoIP provider to do this makes them a significantly better option than other providers. This thread is a classic example where the OP wouldn't be having troubles if they were with VFX because their device would automatically have all the settings provisioned.

I'm at a complete loss to explain why other major VoIP providers don't do this. The vast majority of people have no idea how to configure VoIP equipment and there is a lot to get right. Auto provisoning of Linksys devices is dead simple and allows you to remove a major support hassle from people who simply have no idea what they are doing.

I'd hate to think how much more complex my day job would be if I didn't have full control over the hundreds of devices we have out there.

The Vodafone Huawei hg556a has voip function.You don't need the spa2102.

Whatever problems you have (whether bridge or NAT like I used on PAP2) you should be able to get correct IP address if WAN side connects to your router and and you enable DHCP.

Time to find a new industry!
