I have been watching the connection status of my trunk for close on four weeks now (since I first mentioned the issue) and the connection has been rock solid. No further disconnects at all since the VFX team did whatever they did!

OK mine has been fine for a few weeks but dropped all trunks 30mins ago. Anyone else affected? This is damn embarrassing for our company and the fact that it suddenly stops working is causing a real annoyance with WXC. It used to be 100% perfect but it seems they are constantly changing settings at their end which causes it to drop for us users.

Just checked the logs now and sure enough the VFX trunk is showing "Request Sent" from 20:20 9 June 2009 (i.e. last night). It has been very stable for some weeks now, but there have been comments in the VFX forum about trunk issues over the last couple of days.

Forcing a Trixbox reload has reset the connection and it has registered now. The real problem is that we have to manually check the registrations every day now and that is reducing the value proposition!

Interestingly, I never have to touch the 2Talk trunk. Its just always available!!!

There was an outage of the VFX service last night that started around then and lasted for probably 30 mins or a bit longer. Seems that Asterisk didn't renew itself when VFX came back online.

Thetimeout issue actually occured to me last week as well. It's something that only seems to be affecting Asterisk connections - it's not affecting ATA's or other PBX software/hardware.

@sbiddle. I have been thinking about whether a cron job could be created detect the status of the trunk connections and force a reset of Trixbox when the connections are not found. Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that, but it could be worth asking the question in the Trixbox forums. It is probably unreasonable to expect internet based services to always be available, but neither is constantly needing to check equipment.

There has to be a way to get the Trixbox to look after itself better in this scenario - eh?

I noted that today when we had DVX issues at work problem went away very quickly (before I could contact anyone at WXC) but straight after it was resolved I found I couldn't ring my home VFX line until I SSH'd in and did a reload so wonder if that is related.

I've had more quirks with WXC in the past 2 months than in the previous two years.

I may ask someone who works for WXC to post a trixbox config that won't keep dropping lines in light of what we all suspect is something that has changed on their end?

It's not so much something they've done at their end. It appears to be some sort of issue with Asterisk in general not succesfully re-registering. I've seen references elsewhere to Asterisk not wanting to play nicely with some SBC's.

But what we can't understand is that is has been solid for 18months and over the last few months without any config changes we are suddenly running into these issues?

Should be really easy - I'm happy to write something for you, but I'd need to have an example 'failing' system to get some data from (just output of the appropriate asterisk command showing the trunk status will do).

and set this up as a cron job every hour. While it won't fix the issue immediately when the disconnect occurs it would mean it would at least force a reload every hour which would fix the problem if the trunk was stuck on Registration Sent and not Registered.

Which is what I'd do, but I was going to write the code that sits above that deciding if the trunk state is worthy of a reload - that way it can run every 5-10 minutes :)

@mjb: that would be a very useful add-on I think. The Asterisk CLI has a SIP SHOW REGISTRY option that returns a list of all of the peers, which in my case is actually the trunks and one of the data items on each line is the State. Registered means we are good and Request Sent means we need a reload. So any line returned by that CLI call that indicates REQUEST SENT could be a trigger for a reload.

Does that help - or am I teaching grandma to suck eggs?

when you get one of these situations, can you please post the output of sip show registry? (which is what I was hunting for in my brain when I mentioned it earlier... I wasn't able to check on my Asterisk box at the time.)

It's going to be fairly simple - just need the example text to test with.

Sure thing will do. You can see the output of that function on the web page PBX - PBX Settings - Admin - Tools - Asterisk Info - SIP Info (assuming Trixbox v2.6). The Sip Registry section at the top of the web page is precisely the data that is returned from the SIP SHOW REGISTRY CLI call.

In my case, when the VFX trunk was down, instead of "Registered" in the fourth field on each line I had "Request Sent". When it happens again I will grab the screen and send it to you.
