I was looking to be able to set up a phone number in Australia that when called diverts to ring a nz number. Looked on the net and there are a whole load of different options but they all want a monthly fee that i am trying to get around any ideas ?

Outside the box Buy a mobile phone in Oz and redirect calls here can that be done?

If you buy a mobile in Australia it will probably be a prepay. If you don't recharge aftr a few months the credit expire and the number is lost. Also you will pay for the call diversion - and international calling prices no less. At the end paying the monthly fee may not be a bad idea.

The best way to achieve that is via VoIP. You can buy VoIP numbers in Australia and have the ring your VoIP phone or phone system here in New Zealand.

Many of our customers do that.

I actually just changed over to voip here in nz and have been really happy with it Ok I will look into that I am also trying to find a virtual address like privatebox does here in nz but over there they are all silly prices

Ok so here is what I found out

Ihave a linksys Pap2 unit that can be setup too have two lines (two different numbers)

The one i use here in NZ which is a local nz number
and then I could have one setup for a australian local number that would ring here with NO diversion charges

Cost of the australian side was from a company that Faktor

MONTHLY FEE: $0 INCOMING PHONE NUMBER (DID): Optional
LOCAL / NATIONAL CALLS: 12 cents ( untimed )
MOBILE CALLS: 27 cents per minute
INTERNATIONAL CALLS: From 1.9 cents per minute
NUMBER OF LINES: 1

you would pay a $3 monthly charge for the DID number

and Ithink thats it

2talk do AU numbers (I have one and it works great), but will set you back around $7 a month.

Faktortel is only $3 a month. Terminate it to you PAP2 and you won't pay diversions

Numbers aren't free. Typically speaking in many countries the free numbers are either premium rate numbers or funded by call termination charges. Aussie pricing will also vary depending on whether it's an ACMA number or not.

I've used Faktortel for a number of years and had no issues with them.

If you had more money to spend, you could get a VoIP phone like the Siemens Gigaset IP which can handle multiple VoIP accounts on the same handset, and automatically choose the right VoIP account depending on where the call is to. e.g:
