Need to upgrade the phone system at work and looking at a hosted option instead of the traditional hardware on-site solution. Currently looking at TBD Holdings / Go Sip. Any recommendations?

2talk is pretty good, but their sort-of-prepaid billing model isn't ideal if you just want a monthly invoice.

$7ish per line/DDI. Free inter-2talk calling, and pretty much all the features you could expect from a basic PBX (and more).

How many users/extensions are you looking at? Concurrent calls?

Need things like conference facilities?

15 users. 8 concurrent. Conference calls would be good.

You should check out Vadacom too.  Very nice system (and hosted).

What PBX do you have now?

What about lines? BRI? PRI? POTS?

EFTPOS/Fax/Alarm monitoring requirements?

Yea Vadacom could be a go. For 15 users I would seriously suggest VDSL too just so there no chance of fully utilising the upstream on an ADSL.

The other thing too is phone systems cost a lot less than what they did 10 years ago. 15 users isnt that many so wouldnt cost much to have an in house system installed. Obviously upfront cost is greater but then the only ongoing cost you have is the tiny line rental. You will be able to customise a lot more with an in house system. I would suggest either Samsung or NEC for an enterprise level phone system at SMB prices.

What Area/city are you in?

If you went with a new phone system upfront costs can be removed by leasing a system (or even a lease to own option)
I would also consider an Avaya IP Office system if you were to look at replacing your current one instead of going for a hosted option.

If you looking to cut line costs the Avaya system can be connected up with SIP lines, or there may be better phone line plans for your current lines. (like free local calling plans or free national calling plans)

My old company provides private PBX hosting as a managed service (as in your complete own private instance) even though they don't advertise it on their website. Vadacom look good but they have very long contract terms. Really depends what you are after and whether the economics stack up.

Just put your scenario in to the NEC configurator...
15x 12-Button Digital keysets
4 SIP trunks
4 Mobile Extensions (Links cellphone to the system. Basically a speed dial but with some DISA type functions)
Voicemail & Auto Attendant

Would be around $7k installed. And you will have a lot more control over your system compared with a hosted solution.

Been talking with a number of suppliers and I have a question. What do you guys think of putting SIP directly over an internet connection which is not a "business grade" guaranteed service? We'd have up to 10 lines going at any one moment.

What's the connection? ADSL? VDSL?

If I have a customer with only a need for 2 or 3 lines I will just get them desk phones directly on 2talk. They can transfer, call pickup, auto attendant and voicemail etc. but it is nice and cheap and works quite well. Anymore than that and we go for an in house system.
You just get so so much more flexibility with a PBX in house than what is offered 'in the cloud'.
10 lines though I would get atleast VDSL just so there is plenty of bandwidth. VLANing with good QoS is a good idea too if all the phones are IP. Thats why I like having a system on site too as that way the local phones can be digital and the SIP stuff all goes to only the system.

Based on all your comments and talking with suppliers I am definitely now leaning back towards an in-house system. I really appreciate all this help cheers guys.
