Hi guys, When I Skype my family in China, for the past month or so, in the evening, viewing their webcam is really crap and voice is so choppy to the point where there is no point to talk (but they can see and hear us fine).. then recently, they say that viewing our webcam is really crap and voice is choppy, but we can see them and hear them fine!

Not sure if this is our fault or their fault. I'm on a Slingshot plan and ADSL2+. It usually works fine in the morning and when evening (our evening is China's afternoon) starts, the quality starts going down... My guess is probably because more people are using the internet at night? But it can't be that bad.. or can it?

I often skype family and friends in NZ from Japan. Video quality is consistently terrible - they are on a range of NZ isps.
Skype video quality to almost any other location in the world from here is usually very high quality.

I'm not in NZ - but I am on a fiber connection.
I think it is just a case that NZ has bad throughput to Asia.
Try downloading a linux distro from an Asian mirror in NZ as see how slow that goes.  :-)

Routing and the performance to a lot of Chinese sites has turned to cr*p in recent weeks, no matter what ISP you use.

My wife is in Beijing and we chat daily using QQ Messenger (Chinese) and is usually fine. We find it is better overall than skype. Problem in China is their broadband plans are dirt cheap but their plans are very slow and limited, between 512kb's to 2Mb;s max but unlimited data use). That is changing though. They don't have the luxury of choice of privider as we do.

My son is in Singapore and we use skype which is fine. His broadband speed is much superior to most Chinese people.
