Is it possible to set up Asterisk to be a sip trunk server like 2Talk is?

I have an Asterisk box here which is trunked to 2Talk.

I'm playing around with FreePBX on a PI.

I want to know if I can just connect my PI to my existing server and forward a number to it?

So basically a satellite pabx.

I believe this is what IAX (Inter-asterisk exchange) is built for. I have never tried it but I think that is the track you will need to go down.

I think it mainly involves establishing an IAX peer between the two PABXs and then it is all down to call routing to make it all work. Again, never tried it, but think it is what you need to do.

We used to do this for our business with wxc trunks to asterisk box at work then IAX trunks to 2 satellite asterisk boxes. Allowed us to work from home if we wanted and use work trunks for calls. We could have just used IP phones but this way was more fun and great asterisk learning. You can use sip or IAX trunks but IAX trunks are easier to set up. Dial rules n misc destinations were the key from memory.
