Family have just moved to Rarotonga. I have set them up an ata (WRP400) with 2 talk number. I have set up a few of these in NZ no problem and fully tested this one before sending it over. Now its there it wont register. All the correct lights are on except the phone line light which tells me its not registering. I am here in NZ trying to trouble shoot it so I am hoping someone might have a clue as a good place to start. Is it possible Cook Islands Telecom have a block on Sip phones?  Any clues appreciated.

Likely that 2talk are blocking registration requests from outside NZ

Would surprise me if they did, as 2talk would be a popular way for International companies to have a NZ number.

It could be to do with timeout settings on your ATA. Internet connectivity in the Cook Islands is via Satellite, so there's huge latency involved (between 500ms and 1s round-trip between here and there). That's pretty uncommon to see in normal use, so ATAs could potentially be timing out on that.

Nope. No issues with 2Talk in Raro. I set up 2talk for a mate on a Cisco modem. I transferred his line recently to a Gigaset to improve the reliability. He has no trouble with it.

Not sure exactly what the issue is. Can you remote into the modem? Maybe use teamviewer or something to remote to a PC that is connected to the modem and look at the settings from there. If you want my settings I can grab them at some stage. I am in Raro the week after next.

Cheers, Matt.

Thanks kiwitrc. That would be really appreciated. Also as I am also moving over there in the new year I would lke to find a solution. I was wondering if I might need to set up STUN on the ata. ???? Also to have a geek friendly contact over there would be good.

Hopefully this thread doesn't get SIP busted in the Cooks. TCI used to be pretty brutal at protecting their revenue stream when I was living there.

Looks like thats not the problem if Matt has it working. I can understand TCI protecting their revenue though. They offer very good service over there and its not cheap to do.

Im just making a plan as to which settings are likely to be the fix.
1 .. Im thinking setting SUN could help?
2... Next I could try changing ports to 50600 ??
3 .. I dont have Nat Mapping enable and Nat keep alive enable ticked .. would this help ??

Any clues as to the best place to start would be appreciated as I will be running blind for a bit with a non techincal person at the other end. (I myself am technical when it works but can be lost when it dosent.)
We have got2talk sorftphone going over there so that is a good start.
Thanks

The softphone app connects to a different proxy. Not sure if it uses a non-standard port though. If the Cook Island telcos are known for blocking stuff then non-standard ports would be the way to go.

Try registering to sip.2talk.co.nz:50600. I think the STUN server still works. Not something I normally set up but I guess this is something that could help. Just pinged it and stun.2talk.co.nz is still there, sitting on their old IP space though so not sure how long it will be around for.
Decreasing registration time would be a good idea and get it sending keep-alive's fairly regularly too.

For the benefit of completion. Turns out there was no problem. Retry got registration success and it has hardly missed a beat since. Thanks for the replies and offers of help.
