Anyone done this? I have had enuf of voip, to many faults and quality problems. Now with Orcon throttling my Unlimited plan. Its time to go backwards to a ph and net that actually works. Presents problems undoubtly, like do I keep my ph number, do I need to pay Telecom for a new connection, etc etc. ?Whats your take on this

Hi, I made the switch back to POTS 2 weeks ago with Vodafone. No problems porting a VOIP number and no "new line" charge. I changed because the wife didn't like the problems with VOIP.

What VoIP providers have you tried? What troubleshooting have you done on your broadband connection? Are you on an ADSL2 connection?
I've been using VoIP for years, no issue.

If you have problems with VoIP you really need to look into why these are occurring - VoIP itself isn't the problem.

To move a number back you'll simply need to request POTS back on and for the number to be ported. If you have a number originally assigned to Telecom and have moved exchanges you won't be able to get the same number back without paying a Customerlink fee each month.

I ditched both VoIP and POTS and got our landline terminating on my wifes mobile for an extra $20 per month (using 2 degrees). We're paying $50/mth for her mobile with a good plan now, and no longer paying that $50/mth for the pstn.

solved three problems:
- I didn't want to pay for a landline (wanted to go naked)
- I didn't want to bother with home PSTN VoIP either (have Skype/Lync etc)
- I don't like answering the phone

I've had no issues with orcon voip.
And they don't throttle or shape their unlimited plan anymore.

You won't get much help through their awesome call centre, but I'm sure someone on here may be able to offer some solutions.

Got it sorted after spending an hour on the ph to Orcon, First off I am advised that it cant be done and I need to go another isp to get my line back because of some network configuration problem here.

Nekminit

They call me back in the nick of time, As I was pressing the signup for Worldnet. Its all a mistake we can change you back after all.

Sorry folks voip sucks, after almost 2 years of problems we still had no usable phone after 7.30pm.
Its obviously no spare bandwidth and cant be fixed.

If ya thinking of it, give it miss

We don't do any throttling?? not sure whats up there.

Do you have any fault tickets we could look at?

Guy at work is on orcon and always complains about the phone quality. In the middle of nowhere and their internet is dead slow in the evenings too. Orcon didnt do voip any favours installing it on crappy conjested ADSL connections and making it peoples only option to get a connection without remaining on the grandfathered plans.

Again correction, VoIP does not suck. That's like saying a high performance sports car sucks because you drive it off road all the time.
The underlying issue would likely be your broadband connection. E.G. congested ADSL1 connection, poor wiring, lack of QoS for VoIP traffic etc.

Yes, but when an ISP makes it the only way to get off an old plan (or to move ISP to one without their head in the sand) you do get genius installed on low sync rate DSL and then people decide voip is crap, because they were forced into it by orcon.

It's probably because on Conklin and oversubscribed.... Maybe switching to RBI could solve the issues?

I would suspect the issue lies with the DSL connection itself. I love VOIP. Good technology all the phone features you need. The Conklin's are not over subscribed they only have like 40 ports. People just try and use a 250GB data cap on something that came out and was designed for a 2GB data cap.. So more traffic more congestion. Totally Working as Designed.

You can't blame VoIP for echo - echo can only be introduced by analogue components, ie the speaker and handset. Echo is created in the analogue world by poor settings in the phone and/or ATA or incorrect echo canceller settings in a SIP<->TDM interconnect.

Echo itself it can't be created in the digital world. Once again it comes down to poor configuration.
