I'm about to move out of my house and shut down my telecom connection I've had for 12 years. Without being overly sentimental about it, I kinda like my phone number. We'll be moving to a house that already has a Telecom phone + adsl connection.

If I ported it to 2Talk I could continue to received local phone calls on that number? I know they have an iphone app, but I also assume I could get some sort of IP phone and either plug it into a router, or some wlan capable phone line?

Have I got my head around this properly?

Yep .. you got it .. will just cost you $11.50 per month plus give you some international tolls.

Yep - I did that in Wellington a number of years ago. Just arrange the port for your move out date.

You could either setup an IP phone (don't expect reliable inbound calls on iOS) or just forward the number to somewhere else (I think you get 2000 local mins) per DDI.

Sign up on the free plan and it will just be an add on local DDI. If you dont need national calling minutes, this will drop the cost from $10/m to $6.something

Protip: Don't tell Telecom you are porting out. It's asking for trouble (you'll get the retention treatment and possibly stalled porting).

When you port out, all services attached to that line will be cancelled (ADSL etc) BUT, once the port is complete you should ring Telecom and ensure it actually has been. I had to fight them once after they left the ADSL 'alive' in the system after I ported out, and was a pain to get a refund from them.

So I've had a free plan for a while.

Can I stay on this with a ported number, or do I have to jump on a plan to keep a local number. I doubt it would be used for outgoing, but kept for the odd incoming call.

And while I'm here, if I did want to connect a device to it, are wireless phones available? or is it easier to get an ata and reuse my existing cordless?

You have an account with a free number .. it will become an account (Same account) but now with a number .. which will have a charge.

Use the same account. When you port in you will then have two numbers on the account, your 028 number (assuming you only have 1), and your 04 number. If you login to your free account in 2talk live, there is a link somewhere to request the port. There is a port in fee FYI, but it's not much ($30ish from memory).

There will then be a $6+GST per month charge on the account for the local number, and this will give you 2000 local minutes to use (including if you forward it to another local number). Make sure you have enough credit on the account or better yet, set up an automatic CC topup (I've been doing this for years and it works perfectly).

There are wireless phones available. Siemens make the best ones IMO, but cordless IP phones aren't cheap. Easiest thing to do would be to pick up an ATA (These are good) and connect it to an analogue phone.

sbiddle is already hosting a config file that should work with the Linksys/Cisco range of devices that will automatically set things like ring and tone indications and dial plans etc
