Hi there.

I'm very new to VOIP - just set up a local phone number with 2talk.

I very, very occasionally (2-3 times / year) need to receive faxes. It's not worth paying for a separate 2talk fax line.

If I have my multi-function printer / fax machine plugged into my voip line (and my analog phone plugged into the back of the multi-function printer, am I able to receive faxes over the voip line? No faxability or anything - I'll just ask people to send me a fax and hit the receive button manually.

Is this possible or is there some extra magic required (improved line quality etc) that would require a separate fax line through 2talk?

What ATA are you using and did you configure it yourself or use a Cisco ATA with autoprovisioning?

The simplest answer is no, it's never going to work simply by picking up the phone and pressing the start button like the analogue world.

Can it work? It certainly can, but there are many, many variables that will determine whether it will succeed or not.

This.

Go to 2talk website, "Plans and Services" and add a fax line. Once it's set up you can have it set to deliver messages by email.

Yep definitely possible on 2Talk. But you will need a "fax" line allocated to reliably receive faxes a handful of different settings on your ATA.

An 028 number would be a good idea.

Yep go with the free 028 fax to email line. Then those who want to send you a fax can decide if it's worth their while paying to send you a fax.

Well, not quite.

It's a free 028 line which is free for any other 2talk users to call (either from other 028 2talk numbers or local / national 2talk numbers).

However, for anyone outside the 2talk network it will cost typical mobile call charges to send faxes to it.

So really it's not a free as in "anyone can fax to it for free" number.

I grabbed a cheap Netcomm Wireless NF5 and configured it myself. Very happy with it so far.

Thanks for confirming I'd need a dedicated fax line through 2talk.
