Do you still get these on Skype numbers, or other VOIP numbers?

Less of the attitude please, I'm just asking.

In your experience, is there any difference?

The reason I asked is that the numbers issued are not part of the "normal" nz number range.

Eg 09 889 xxxx for a Skype number in Akl, or 028 xxxxxxxx for a 2talk number.

I'm really asking for the VOIP forum members personal experience.

And the numbers won't be in the white pages.

My "normal" number isn't, and has never been, in the white pages. I very rarely receive these types of calls. I have never had a scam call.

I have a 'normal' number but have only a VOIP connection.
The assumption that a number is 'normal' hasn't been valid for a number of years.
You can get 'normal' numbers associated with your mobile (and things like VF home fone wireless) where people calling you wouldnt know they're actually calling a mobile network device. And because they're 'normal' numbers it costs you no more to call them than ringing the house next door.

Things aren't as black and white as they used to be.

JohnR knows a thing or two about phone numbers... You would be wise to listen.

They are still a listed number range that any overseas call center can find out by looking at who has been allocated what range. Then they just set their bot's dialling away.

No matter what service you use there is always a chance of bogus calls.

A more interesting question would be how many of them block their numbers from caller ID? I get quite a lot of calls from blocked numbers - I never answer them and they never leave messages, except for one this week who left a recording of their hold music on my voicemail.

The ones I get are usually either a private number, or start with aanotehr country code. Although I have had some that start with 09 but then they have about 9 numbers after that, which is too long to be a NZ number.

028 numbers are unlikely to get those types of calls as they are terminated as mobile calls (with the associated ~30c a minute charge) while any "local" (geographic) VoIP number is just as likely as a Telecom POTS number to get them.

One somewhat effective way to prevent many of them is to register your number as a business number.  First, it prevents it going in the telephone directories (without paying, of course) and second, any of the targeted spam callers will work from a list of residential numbers, which obviously won't include yours.
