I am considering going with a naked broadband provider so will probably need to get a VOIP setup.
Who is the best provider and what can I expect during setup?
I genuinely have no idea but its a way to trim costs.

Id appreciate and pro's and con's and generally just what to expect setting up and using VOIP.
I have considered just using my mobile but I receive a lot of calls so its more of a courtesy to the caller (parents, friends etc).

From what I've seen I think the easiest way would probably be with WXC. They would provide you with equipment all configured by them and you would be good to go. No mucking around with different pieces of equipment or configuration issues.

+1 on WXC, pre-configured devices makes it easy. Their prices are slick, and come standard with all the bells an whistles (CallerID, voicemail etc.)

If you can follow instructions and are looking for the cheapest voip provider then look at 2talk.
You can have your naked broadband with any provider and have your voip with a separate provider.
2talk provide landline number for $7/month and if your mobile is a smart phone you can set it up to receive calls directly on your mobile.

If you want it to just work then WxC is the best choice.

If you are happy to have a play 2Talk is a great option too but does require you to configure the gear. In saying that though, they have a device provisioning tool now for the popular ATA's (SPA112, PAP2T etc.) and Cisco IP phones. So if you can follow instructions that will be ok.

Edit: Oh and yes 2Talk have their own softphone app which is 'plug an play'. You just enter account details and it works.

Another good reason to go with the same provider for both your broadband and VoIP is they usually apply all the required QoS to the VoIP traffic. Something that you cannot control when it is two different providers.
And of course one finger to point should either fail :)

Yea good point about broadband.

2Talk have their broadband product available on ADSL, VDSL and UFB and will apply QoS to voice traffic even if you have gone over cap.

Thanks guys, I've e-mailed WxC about their VOIP residential plans, just need to make sure that we get free local calling, 2talk has minutes and while its 2000 a month between my partner talking to her parents and my son talking to his grand parents I'm unsure how long it would last.
I won't be using their broadband either as its unknown to me, I will be going to big pipe.

Appreciate the help though people, the next thing will be setting it up and explaining anything to the Mrs.

Request a public ip with Big Pipe, otherwise your VoIP set up will tricky at best.

2000 minutes is over 30 hours worth of calling, I'd be surprised if you manage to do local landline to local landline calling that caps that. If you're worried just look at your previous months calling and add up the amount of local landline calling that was made from your line.

My parents are set up with 2talk, have not had to touch their setup in over a year, is very reliable.

I've set up many customers with Vibe VoIP and this is rock solid also, just a bit more expensive.

Note 2talk has 250 minutes of free national/international calls included in their plan too.

It all depends on your calling habits. Our voip landline is mostly for receiving calls and making international calls.

Snaps voip is pretty expensive for international calls. We make calls to Nicaragua and 2talk is 30c/min compared to snaps $1/min.

2talk so far have the lowest calling rates with local numbers, but they aren't plug and play and do require you to setup your devices.
