Hi all, for our own ISP we are out of the contract next year, should we get a naked fiber connection and we get a VOIP phone number.  We can port our local number across right?  Also would the telephone cable to the Fritzbox (now) be the same?  We have a few phones around the house - a single telephone jack from the living room plugs into the router.  So we just need to adapt some settings into the router?

Many thanks.

Sound like you are with Snap.

I'd give them a call. If you like there deal they will probably let to move over to fiber now if you re-sign to them. Worth an ask.

If you are changing provider another story...

The telephone number should be able to be ported no matter who you go with.

The fibre normally goes to one point in the house. you can then connect your phones or internally phone wiring into the router/modem and the router/modem into that fibre termination.

One thing you do lose is your old copper line to the street. We have to go VOIP.

When we moved to Napier, I got us a Naked DSL (now Fibre) connection and a local number with 2Talk.  We didn't already have Napier number to port, but they would have done that if we'd asked.

Works great.  I have a Cisco SRP527 which does the Ethernet termination, the Wifi and has a Voice module.  A FritzBox looks like it's same thing as a SRP, just much, much uglier.  I hope you have a cupboard to keep it in.

Where was I?

Oh yes. The VoIP has been very good.  A few small teething issues (my fault) but apart from that, quite flawless.  The only thing I'd say is ensure you do prioritise all outbound RTP (voice) traffic.

We are already with Snap Fiber 30Mbps now.

With a different ISP after our contract.
With my Fritzbox.  Can I just use that?  Like it is at the moment.  For now we just plug a single cable from the living room telephone jack into the router and the bedroom phones ring.  Could I like go for Big Pipe and get a 2Talk VOIP?

Do I need a special IT cupboard and extra device(s) we might just pay more for a all in 1 solution with a VOIP local phone number ....

No extra stuff needed.

Just reconfigure the Fritz for your new VoIP provider and all will be good. BigPipe + 2Talk will be ok, just be sure to get a public IP from them otherwise things will be very hit and miss.
