Hello

We are wishing to upgrade our existing copper line phove connection and broadband to VOIP and UFB connection in Tauranga.

The problem we have is that the house alarms,although unmonitored, and door bell/intercom at front door work on the copper wired network.

Has anyone had experience with this when they have upgraded to UFB.?

I rewired our phone jacks to connect to the UFB voice service (first with Orcon, now with MyRepublic) and it works fine. The lady who answered the phone at Wanganui Security (who monitor our alarm) says the alarm at her house is monitored over UFB in exactly the same way and it works just fine.

Having said this, if your insurance company is giving you a discounted premium due to having a monitored alarm, check if they have any requirements around this. Without a UPS, your UFB phone line won't work when the power goes out, which means the alarm won't be able to dial out. We don't tell our insurance company that we have a monitored alarm (makes almost no difference to the premium) and put our ONT and router on a UPS anyway.

Running an alarm over VoIP is not recommended. Using ContactID (the most common alarm protocol) over VoIP is a 98% solution and will never be 100%. This is not good enough.

Ring your alarm company and ask about IP modules to convert your existing alarm to work over IP so it'll plug into your router. If your alarm company asks any questions about IP / UFB my recommendations or don't offer IP monitoring (believe it or not many still don't) my advice is to tell you alarm company where to go and find one that isn't stuck in the 1980's.

My alarm company is probably stuck in the 1980s (be fair, at least the early 2000s) but are so ridiculously cheap that I don't care.

Who is your monitoring company in Tauranga? Nutech or Watchdog?

Both of them offer radio monitoring (Radionet) or IP module with GSM backup from https://alarmnz.com

Radionet probably will be the cheapest one.
