So I've followed the instructions from:
http://blog.2talk.co.nz/spa2102.html

One quirk I've found so far is that when dialling 789 for messages there's a 10 second delay before the answering service prompts for my pin.

Aside from turning off STUN is there anything else that anyone has found that needs correcting?

There is nothing in the dialplay to do 789 as a short code so that is to be expected. Put a # at the end and it usually makes ATA's process immediatly.

Also noticed that my Panasonic handset now shows a little voicemail icon (envelope with a speech bubble), don't think the orcon genius black provided that. Brilliant.

Random other benefits: Orcon's PSU is 12V x 1.5A, suggesting up to 18watts.  Cisco's PSU is 5V x 2A making it a peak of 10watts but there's no way of knowing if there's a power saving short of measuring during idle/on call (and we're talking pennies here haha).  Besides, this Cisco unit cannot drive more than one phone per port, unlike the Genius where you're supposedly allowed to connect it to your isolated house phone wiring.

Aside from the curiosity factor of setting this up, the main benefit for me would have to be the size of the device compared to a fully fledged router:  The PAP2T is barely bigger than a CD

The pap2t can ring heaps of phones. Not sure where you got one device per port from. It cant handle vintage phones with bells in them, that makes it freak out a little.

Not sure where you got that from. The REN of the PAP2T (and 2102 and 112/122) is 3. The REN of all recent Netcomm voice products (incl the NF4V that Orcon use) is 3 also. I'm not sure what the Orcon black is but the Telepermit sticker should list the REN on it.

From the manual:

IMPORTANT: Do not connect either of the Phone ports to a telephone wall jack.  Make sure you only connect a telephone or fax machine to either of the Phone ports.  Otherwise, the Phone Adapter or the telephone wiring in your home or office may be damaged.

There was also a youtube video I watched where someone did that and said their unit got extremely hot.

I don't see REN but my orcon unit has a permit sticker with RN=0.5

They are telling you not to plug it into a jack with phone on it. If the jack is isolated from the chorus/telstra-voda-clear wiring then its not a phone jack on the wall, its just a jack on the wall that goes to somewhere else.

Good point :)

and yes pressing # after dialling the voicemail number connects it straight away.

would adding 789| to the start of the dial plan fix that?

It might sort that out. I havent bothered with dialplans since I just really recieve calls on it, so the default one hasnt let me down, and voicemail to email means that I dont have to do a thing to check my voicemails

Depends if it would be a direct pattern match or clash with any other match in the dialplan.

That's telling you not to plug in into an active POTS line. The ports on the 112 are FXS ports for plugging a phone into, not FXO ports for plugging into a POTS line.

Plugging your ATA into an active POTS line with 48V on it will potentially fry it when the line rings.

Hooking the output of the ATA into your home wiring which has been disconnected from the incoming POTS is perfectly safe, and something that's pretty common.

yep and that's been covered already.  the chorus techs advised me I could do this with the orcon router when they did the install way back when and disconnected the phone wiring from the street for exactly that

I've just noticed that when I call home from my work desk phone the home phone doesn't ring and I end up reaching voicemail. Calling from my cell phone however makes the phone ring. Any ideas?

*bump*

Have found that I currently cannot dial 789 or 095500789.  Calling 789 I hear a very brief ring for a split second or calling the 09 number I briefly hear the start of the female voice saying Hi ...
