Gigaset say they have free calling Gigaset to Gigaset. But I read that this applies only for Northern Hemisphere users. Can anyone enlighten me?

If you purchase one of their SIP enabled phones (A510, C610, and theres one more) it comes with a 'Gigaset.net' sip account. Never used it but I dont see why it would be restricted to just North America.

A $10 2Talk bundle will give you minutes to Australia. No good for them calling back to you though unless they are also on 2Talk, which they could be with free 028 numbers. My concern with something likw the Gigaset service is you have no idea where the proxy is and how long it will actually function for.

Gigaset calling works between any 2 Gigaset devices anywhere in the world.

Many brands of SIP hardware have such functionality, and other manufacturers such as Obihai offer it across all their phones and ATAs which are way cheaper than buying Gigaset handsets. You can read about this in my Obi ATA review.

Despite having a Gigaset phone at home and having deployed quite a few I'm not a great fan of them. There are better products out there now.

The Gigaset was the first (and still is) rock solid SIP device I used (mind you I kept persevering with the crap Cisco WRP400 so it was probably my own fault).

Steve, what is the best consumer solution for a home with few cordless phones? An Obi with some DECT phones?

The problem with the Gigaset is that they are expensive kit.

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

IMHO the Yealink W52's are the best bang for your buck these days. I still rate the Snom M9 as the best IP DECT handset around, but you're paying a lot more for them.

The Grandstream IP DECT phones are cheap as chips and work pretty well, but are ugly.

Gigaset are the cheapest of the lot!!

Personally I like the W52's better as well. Much better software, gigaset's is very basic.

If you want mega flash then I would pick the Uniden EXP1240 which are just OEM'd Verse IP DECT phones - the same ones both NEC and Samsung use. Extremely good phones but not really designed for the home situation.
