If vodafone or Telecom want to steal a few customers of one another they should bring out a skype phone like 3 in the UK
http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/skype_phone.omp

The plan lets you use the full blown 3g service to make calls with skype which is good if you are making international phone calls to land lines and national as well.
They still make money of text pxt messages sent on the phone.
It comes on prepayed and on a plan as well so money to be made in the plan area.

you can't send text's through skype I don't know about the receiving calls through skype side of things.

Am not planning on bringing one back to NZ with me as the mobile broadband plans are still too expensive in NZ compaired to the uk.

T-mobile who I am currently with only charge £7.50 a month for all you can eat mobile boradband with a fair use policy.

It's no good trying to bring one back as they won't work.

These are not VoIP phones and still use regular voice circuits for the call - 3 run their own Skype gateway that interfaces with the Skype network and routes the voice traffic over their network as a regular call. You also can't use SkypeOut so can only call other Skype users for free, if you want to call another landline or mobile you're paying regular mobile rates.

I don't think there really is anything great about them but then again I'm not a Skype fan despite loving VoIP.

Ok

Did not know that you could not use the skypeout feature (dumb consumer not reading the FAQ)

Would not be much use then unless the person you wanted to talk to had skype and were near a computer then.

If you've got friend(s) who has the same phone then you're fine as you can get cheap calls between them them 24/7.

3 have these phones on all their networks and have an exclusive deal at present however I would imagine it will extend beyond 3 at some stage.
