Is it really necessary to setup a dynamic dns and have asterisk resolve it when it is only connecting out to sip services?

Even when it still had the old IP in there i was able to make calls ok it seemed, incoming calls however had no audio.

I don't really want to get a static IP as this is all I need it for, and don't want to have to rely on dynamic ip updates since thats just creating unneeded traffic, I thought that sip servers got the IP from the source address rather then the payload, is that the case or not? I can understand the need to have the real IP available to asterisk if I was to be connecting sip clients in from the internet, but I am not wanting to do that at this stage since the lag is way too bad when doing that.

Anybody?

I called slingshot to order a static IP, and once I had explained what it was, then being on hold for a while, then explained what I wanted it for they have put the request thru, but if I should be able to get asterisk to work on a natted dynamic IP as a sip client only (no need for a server to softphones on the internet at this stage) then I would rather not have a static since it makes downloading from rapidshare easier not to have one.

No you shouldn't do, natting should take care of this as well as the SIP server / SIP Network, most devices connect using nat and a dynamic IP with Asterisk is no different the detail will be in the SDP info, if you send me the trace of the call with no audio I can probably point out what is wrong if you like but your provider is probably the best people to talk to

I think there might be something else causing the stuffed calls because even with the right IP in there and restarting asterisk I had issues with calls not completing and then one way audio, and shortly after the router crashed again. I am back using the dynajunk, it seemed ok for a few days but is back to the regular crashes and we noticed last time that it would spaz out and make connections lag and stop responding properly for a while before crashing which is why the ex flatmate replaced it with his billion.

So all troubleshooting is off till I replace the router I think. Ordered a static ip from slingshot (I think) so will see if that solves it or not, but I am strongly suspecting the router now.
