Hi guys,

My parents run their small business from home. When they moved the business home a few years back I tried to get them set up with voip. They opted for the traditional route and went with copper. I’m now investigating voip once again to try and reduce the telephone costs. My knowledge is fairly limited so I need some help.

This is the current set up:
• 2 copper lines (with 2 numbers, one being the primary and one the stepper)
• PABX
• Patch panel (1 cat6 cable to each workstation allocated to phones).
• VDSL port next to patch panel
• 3 phone extensions (Panasonic KX-TG6711NZ, Pan… KX-T7730 and Pan… KX-T7030X) - pretty ancient I know

In short, there are 3 phones which can make use of either of the 2 lines. 1 line has a public facing number and if it’s busy it goes through to the other line. They can transfer calls etc as well.

They’re currently with Vodafone on a Office Net VDSL Unlimited plan. This costs $270 per month (Incl GST) for unlimited calls (within NZ) on both lines, unlimited data and voicemail. Their usage is usually around 1000 – 1500 minutes per month. This is usually split fairly evenly between mobiles and landlines.

I guess the goal would be to switch to unlimited naked fibre and have the phones set up with a voip company. I currently have the old homeline number and old business number forwarding to the new number through 2talk. So I’ve made the first step into the voip world.

  1. Based on their usage, would they save money by switching? If so, which company?
  2. What equipment would need to be upgraded/purchased?
  3. Is there anyone on here that sets up voip services for small businesses? Location: North Shore

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
