Peoples,

Just checking in to see if anyone else can confirm if 2talk is currently in the middle of some style of outage.

I have a hand full of sites that are all getting different kinds of issues in the last 20-30 mins, yet to get hold of someone from 2talk via phone or email etc.

Would be nice if they posted updates via twitter etc.

Cheers

Lee

Yes they are aware of it, and they posted an update on their Network Status page about 45 minutes ago.

See https://live.2talk.co.nz/

They do post the same updates via Twitter. What makes you think they don't?

oh @2talkNS ... didn’t have that one in my twitter subs, only what I assume to be their marketing address.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Cheers

Only seems to be registered connections. Connections using SIP trunks seem to be fine.

It's manifesting itself as registrations timing out, but also 20-30 second delays in call setup times for outbound invites (regardless of registration state).

Oh, PS, and it's intermittent (the worst type of fault to track down!). Glad I don't work at 2talk today ;)

...and down again.

SIP trunks (peering) having problems as well with inbound callls.

This type of thing has been happening every couple of months for about a year, we've been busy migrating clients elsewhere.

myfullflavour: This type of thing has been happening every couple of months for about a year, we've been busy migrating clients elsewhere.

Over the last 12 months or so we haven't seen any occurrences of these types of outages at all (and we monitor them fairly closely; we noticed them within 30 seconds of first logged occurrence today and about 12 minutes before 2talkNS was updated).

There were certainly a lot of these sorts of problems in the 2-3 years prior to that, but we'd found last 12 months or so to have been very stable.

It's a shame to see problems again. I hope it's just a once-off and not the start of a consistent decrease in reliability back to the bad old days...

BTW, I see they have just just issues another tweet to say all resolved.

To where are you migrating clients?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

12 months of history, from their network status feed:

07/04/16: Portal down
03/03/16: Inbound call issues
13/01/16: Inbound call issues
14/12/15: Inbound call issues
03/12/15: Call issues
27/10/15: Registration issues
25/10/15: Network problems
10/08/15: Call issues
27/07/15: Network problems

We (our customers) experienced maybe 4-5 of those events first-hand?

By comparison our other vendors haven't had a voice outage that I can think of, certainly not in the past year.

Vibe Communications. Also in the process of implementing a new softswitch so will have a second diverse carrier active (Spark) once that implementation is done.

Yes ok fair call, there have definitely been issues in past 12 months. I guess my point was more that there haven't been any of these major widespread issues like today and that were quite common in the 2 years prior to that (the ones listed were either in the wee hours, or affected only a subset of users; luckily not ours!).

But I'm not trying to make excuses for them or anything. You'll definitely get a better uptime from Vibe. We have circuits and SIP regos with Vibe too and have never had an issue last more than 2-3 mins (and even then only twice in 3 years, both related to physical faults; once a fibre cut, the other time a line card).

CYaBro: another option is WorldXChange; although they're not immune to problems either! There are others in this game too, but I've found few that have a feature set as extensive as 2talks. I guess you have to weigh up what's important. myfullflavour has the right idea though (if you're big enough): DIY, and do it with diversity :)

I'd be really interested to know if Spark will give you autonomy in setting outbound CLID with their connection (if that's information you'd be willing to share). That's one of the major plusses with Vibe and makes them a great diverse path for outbound when 2talk do have issues. It doesn't help the inbound routing of course, but at least it gets _some_ traffic flowing again.

On a side note, wouldn't it be great if NZ had it's own local version of the voiceops mailing list too! Something a little more operator-oriented than the more end-user focused GZ. There are some great tips to be gleaned on voiceops, but I find it a tad too US-centric...
