So I had this ATA for a while, it's an ex @sbiddle one.

Incoming calls are fine, clear and a good volume.  But outgoing calls seem to be quieter with a bit of a hiss.   Is this possible?  are outgoing and incoming calls treated differently?

What would I look at (what can I post here for helping diagnose)?

Codec choice is probably a factor, check your preferred codecs.  I'd set G.722 as the first one, followed by G.711A and then G.711U before G.729

See how that goes.  Many endpoints and gateways will use the first mutually supported codec listed in the request.

Ok.  It's currently set to G729a.  Not sure how I tell it an order or preference.  I'll set it to G.711A as there is no G722 on this one.

G.722 will never work as it's an ATA so can never work (analogue phones aren't wideband).

You should just be using G.711a or G.711u, G729 is a low bitrate compressed codec and sounds terrible. My pick would be different codecs being used for inbound and outbound.

I can tell the difference, of course it's not as good as a phone designed for hi def, but the audio circuits and transducers in phones are much better than they were when the 8x8 digital standards were decided upon... G.711A is a perfectly good choice though, certainly better than G.729 (mind you, anything is)

Btw changed from g729 to 711a. Not noting any difference. Still seems quiet and a little hissy fit outgoing, nice and clear for incoming.
