hi there,

We are currently with Vodafone and have a home phone/broadband and sky package.

We are going to switch from them and move the broadband to bigpipe, get rid of sky and the landline and get a VOIP number when with bigpipe.

The reason why we still need some sort of landline is for our parents that call us (in there 80's) - they only use a landline.

We would like to keep our existing landline number if possible.

I'm just wondering what's the best way to do all this and what gear would I need to make our existing landline phones work with VOIP.

Also needing advice on which VOIP provider is recommended and the reliability of the service. We will be using the standard modem that comes with bigpipe.

Any help would be much appreciated as we have never setup or used a VOIP before.

Port the number off to a VoIP provider first, so you don't lose the number - if you set up a connection with a new ISP, a notification generally gets sent to the losing ISP, who promptly close your account, and you lose the landline number.

as above.

ported landline over to 2talk they charge frm memory something like 6.95 a month.

My problem is I am using the Huawei modem from Bigpipe and haven't successfully managed to get 2talk working on the router.

From what I have read it seems to be a common issue on the Huawei modems so maybe look at a different brand.

I would port number over before you move/disconnect anything. 2talk were brilliant with all the updates etc and using their website/portal isn't to bad.

The BigPipe router should work no problems - I also know people who have gotten the internal ATA to work with 2talk.

Thanks Michael. For someone thats new to VOIP services would using the internal ATA be a simple thing to do or would it be easier to just get an external one.

Also if anyone can recommend an external ATA to use with 2talk that would be great as well.

Do you already have decent handsets/phones? Do you want a phone in multiple rooms, or just one?

We also use 2talk (though "use" is perhaps a generous description for acting startled once a month (tops) when we hear an unfamiliar ringing noise). Works well. We've got a VoIP phone. Works really well, good call clarity and means you're entirely independent from particular routers / other devices.

The Huawei is fine for VoIP on fibre. There's half a dozen settings you need to change but it's pretty straightforward.

Thanks DarkShadow. Is there anywhere that has the instructions for setting up the Huawei on 2talk?

Also, any recommendations on an ATA. Will the Linksys PAP2T still be ok still since it's been replaced by the cisco one?

I've had 2Talk working with the Cisco ATA. Always had to turn off SIP ALG in the router to get it to work correctly and aim port 5060 to the ATA IP address.

That's super easy if that is the case.
Book fibre install and get it installed.
Put a porting request into 2talk once fibre is on - takes a few working days.
Set up the VoIP hardware - Cisco spa112 is very solid but if your router has an ATA try that first.
It used to be that cancelling the home line cancelled the ads/vdsl but probably worth checking that for sure.

OP can you confirm is your existing connection DSL or fibre? Because it will change the timing when you need to port your phone.

If it's DSL you port your phone after fibre is installed.

If it's fibre you port your phone before you switch ISP.
