Hello all,

This is a bit of a newbie question for the big boys - I am wondering what plans there are in NZ and worldwide for interconnecting SIP providers. I'm just purely curious - have no real use for the information.

Will it end up being like some form of DNS-like system where a PSTN number maps to a user@vsp address, or something along those lines? Or will we forget about numbers and move to a system where we 'dial' a sip address, and PSTN provders simply translate the address into a physical address or phone number?

Cheers for your info or links to relevant places,
Hamish

Interesting question:

I currently use ENUM and have done so for around two years and so far I have had 3 phones calls that have connected using the E.164 number to SIP URI service....

The reality is that for a long time even after the PSTN has become the minority public voice service there will still be many people that have only numbers at their finger tips and therfore not able to dial Names. This is the fundamental issue that ENUM faces when trying to get acceptance nevermind all the political issues that are faced with encumbent Telcos arguing with IP bodies to get control of the new service.

Theres no problem so what are they trying to fix?

Telcos have regulations that conflict with the idea that a person can connect directly to each other in a peer to peer connection and enjoy voice services, the regulations are only likely to get more stringent as we move forward than be relaxed.

Thats my two cents awaiting the flames :-D
