So I havn't closely followed the whole number portability thing, so this is a stupid question, but is number portability only presently between mobile networks, or can other numbers be ported.

In particular, say somebody had an 0800 number tied to thier Vodafone cell account, and that somebody was thinking of getting a VoIP number and running an asterisk box, is there some manner in which that 0800 number can be ported to a voip providor (assuming the voip providor can do 0800 numbers of course)?

0800 numbers aren't part of the number portability agreement and there is no requirement for providers to port these.

You can port 0508/0800 numbers between Telecom/Vodafone/Telstraclear

It's up to you where you terminate the 0800 number to generally, so you should just redirect hthat number to your new VOIP number.

I realise that there are some agreements in place - there is no requirement however. It's an ad-hoc situation that should hopefully improve in the future allowing you to take an existing 0800 number and port it to WxC for example and use it with a VoIP service without having to use call forwarding.
